The Dodgers signed Sauer to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. Sauer made the Royals' Opening Day roster in 2024 after being selected in the Rule 5 draft but was eventually returned to the Yankees, where he held a 6.12 ERA and 30:11 K:BB over 32.1 innings between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The righty was used as a starting pitcher prior to 2024 and it's not clear what role the Dodgers have planned for him.
Bote signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Saturday and received an invitation to spring training, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Bote made the most of limited opportunities with the Cubs last year, going 14-for-46 at the plate with six RBI in 37 games, and he also put up an .887 OPS over 123 plate appearances in Triple-A. He'll now compete for a spot on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster, but at the very least he should serve as a quality organizational depth piece at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Manager Dave Roberts stated he's unlikely to deploy Ohtani (shoulder) as a pitcher during the team's opening series against the Cubs in Tokyo, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. The Dodgers are expected to exercise caution as the club brings him back to the mound following Tommy John surgery, so this report isn't a big surprise. Roberts also mentioned that once Ohtani is cleared to pitch, he expects to utilize the reigning MVP in the DH slot on the days he pitches.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Monday that the team plans for Edman to be its center fielder next season, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Edman offers the versatility to move around to multiple positions, if needed, and that might be required during the season. However, at this early stage of the offseason, the plan is for the switch hitter to see most of his action in center field. Edman -- who signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension in late November -- slashed .237/.294/.417 in 37 regular-season games and .328/.354/.508 in 16 postseason contests for the Dodgers.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Monday that the plan is for Betts to play shortstop next season, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. The team had previously said Betts would move back to the infield, and now it is offering more specificity regarding Betts' position. With Betts handling shortstop, that means Gavin Lux is currently the projected starter at second base and Miguel Rojas is slated for a reserve role.
Treinen signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Dodgers on Sunday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Treinen will stick around Los Angeles after producing a 1.93 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 56 strikeouts over 46.2 innings in 50 regular-season appearances with the Dodgers in 2024. The right-hander will likely operate in a late-inning role with the team in 2025, but he isn't a lock to get more than an occasional save chance. Treinen tallied one save and 16 holds for Los Angeles during the 2024 regular season.
Conforto signed a one-year, $17 million contract with the Dodgers on Sunday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. Conforto will head to Los Angeles after batting .237 with 20 home runs, 66 RBI and 56 runs scored over 130 games with the Giants in 2024. The Dodgers were reportedly looking to secure a left-handed outfielder, and they appear to have found their guy in Conforto. The 31-year-old had some intriguing batting splits in 2024, producing a .284 average with six homers and 20 RBI over 95 at-bats versus lefties, so Conforto may not be limited to a platoon role in 2025.
