The Mets signed Ortiz (elbow) to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Ortiz will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so this is likely a two-year minor-league deal. He holds a career 4.76 ERA and 25:16 K:BB across 34 innings covering parts of five seasons at the big-league level.
The Mets signed Gose to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. A converted outfielder, Gose holds a 4.78 ERA but a 41:17 K:BB over 32 innings at the big-league level. The 34-year-old will be a long shot to win a spot in the Mets' bullpen.
Canning signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Canning made 32 appearances (31 starts) for the Angels last season, accumulating a 5.19 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside a 130:66 K:BB over 171.2 innings. He'll presumably compete with Tylor Megill for the final spot in New York's rotation during spring training, and whoever misses the cut will likely be moved to the bullpen to serve as a long reliever.
The Mets signed Reyes to a minor-league contract Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports. Reyes has not pitched anywhere since 2021 due to multiple right shoulder surgeries, with the most recent one occurring in June of 2023. He's evidently healthy now and the Mets felt he was worth a no-risk flier to see what, if anything, he might have left in the tank. Reyes had lights-out stuff when on the bump, but he's now 30 and it's a complete mystery as to what that stuff might look like now.
Holmes said Tuesday that he wants to throw at least 160 innings in 2025, Metsmerized Online reports. Whether the Mets share the same goal is not clear. Holmes is making the move from the bullpen to the rotation in 2025 after spending each of the last six seasons exclusively pitching in relief. The most innings the 31-year-old has ever thrown in a season came back in 2016, when he tossed 136.1 frames with Double-A Altoona in the Pirates organization. Holmes threw 75 innings between the regular and postseason with the Yankees in 2024.
Waddell agreed to a minor-league contract with the Mets on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Waddell hasn't seen any MLB action since 2021 during stops in Minnesota, St. Louis and Baltimore, and he's spent the last three seasons overseas with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization. The southpaw has revitalized his career in the KBO, posting a 2.98 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with a 215:65 K:BB through 144.1 innings over this three-year stretch. Waddell will be a strong candidate to begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets signed Young to a one-year contract Monday. Young split the 2024 season between Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals organization and with the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization, posting a .917 OPS at the former and a 1.080 OPS at the latter. The Mets have very little in the way of depth at first base right now, but Young is nonetheless likely to begin 2025 at Triple-A Syracuse.
