Thompson-Robinson (calf) was a limited practice participant Thursday. For the second straight day, Thompson-Robinson went down as a limited participant on the Browns' practice report while he tends to a calf strain that he said he sustained on the second snap of his first start of the season in last Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Bengals, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic. While the injury didn't hinder Thompson-Robinson much as a runner (nine carries for 49 yards), he mostly underwhelmed while directing the offense, leading the team to just one scoring drive while completing 20 of 34 pass attempts for 157 yards and two interceptions. Despite the second-year quarterback's poor outing, offensive coordinator reiterated earlier Thursday that Thompson-Robinson is on track to make a second straight start Sunday versus the Dolphins, per Cabot. For his part, Thompson-Robinson told Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal that he doesn't expect the calf issue to slow him down against the Dolphins, but it won't be clear until after Friday's practice whether or not he heads into the weekend with an injury designation.

Remains limited in practice

Trending toward another start

Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey noted Thursday that the team is preparing as if Thompson-Robinson (calf) will start Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports. Thompson-Robinson was estimated as a limited participant on Wednesday's practice report, but at this stage he's trending toward a second straight start this weekend. Dorsey also noted the team still is in the process of determining whether Jameis Winston (shoulder) will be the No. 2 or No. 3 QB versus Miami, assuming Thompson-Robinson starts, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Estimated as limited Wednesday

Thompson-Robinson (calf) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice estimate, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports. The same applies to Jameis Winston (right shoulder), who was the Browns' emergency No. 3 quarterback for this past weekend's loss to the Bengals. The status of both signal-callers is thus worth monitoring as Sunday's game against the Dolphins approaches.
Dealing with calf injury

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that Thompson-Robinson sustained a calf injury during Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Bengals, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Stefanski said Thompson-Robinson, who threw two picks versus Cincinnati and was held without a touchdown while racking up 157 passing yards, will start Week 17 if healthy, per Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site. Jameis Winston (shoulder) was inactive due to a shoulder injury versus the Bengals, leaving Cleveland potentially in position to lean on Bailey Zappe versus Miami in Week 17 if Thompson-Robinson's injury proves significant. Standout tight end David Njoku (knee) also sustained an injury during the team's Week 16 loss.
Pair of picks in starting debut

Thompson-Robinson completed 20 of 34 passes for 157 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding nine carries for 49 yards in the Browns' 24-6 loss to the Bengals on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered. Thompson-Robinson and the Browns' offense as a whole got a big boost on the first play from scrimmage when Jerome Ford ripped off a 66-yard run up the gut of the Bengals' defense. However, in a sign of what type of day it would be for Cleveland, D'Onta Foreman subsequently fumbled at the goal line on that possession and Thompson-Robinson could only help his team to 10 net offensive yards the rest of the first half. The second-year signal-caller then short-circuited consecutive third-quarter drives with interceptions, the first of which came in the end zone. Thompson-Robinson did make plenty of positive plays with his legs and displayed decent command of the offense by connecting with six different targets, but he'll need to eliminate the mistakes to give his team a better chance in a Week 17 home matchup against the Dolphins, a game that head coach Kevin Stefanski committed to having Thompson-Robinson start, per Zac Jackson of The Athletic, provided the minor calf issue the young quarterback suffered on the game's opening drive doesn't prevent him from doing so.
Confirmed to start Week 16

Thompson-Robinson confirmed that Tuesday that he's been named the Browns' starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Cincinnati, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. "Obviously excited for the opportunity," Thompson-Robinson said, while speaking to media at a charity event. "Still going to prepare and study the same way I do every week, and looking to go out there and get a win." Head coach Kevin Stefanski will presumably address the change at quarterback when he speaks to the media Wednesday, but the Browns will turn the offense over to Thompson-Robinson after Winston went 2-5 over his seven starts and threw eight interceptions over then last three games alone. Thompson-Robinson -- who came on in relief of a struggling Winston for the Browns' final two possessions of Sunday's 21-7 loss to the Chiefs -- has made 12 career appearances (three starts) across two seasons, rushing 20 times for 125 yards and completing 51.4 percent of his passes for 540 yards, one touchdown and seven interceptions. While Thompson-Robinson brings intriguing rushing ability to the table, he hasn't shown much aptitude as a passer, and the Browns could opt for a more conservative, run-heavy game plan to limit the risk of turnovers that have plagued the offense in recent weeks. Even in a favorable matchup against a Bengals defense that has routinely surrendered big yardage and point totals all season, Thompson-Robinson still represents a low-end fantasy option at quarterback.
Replacing Winston as starter

Thompson-Robinson is expected to replace Jameis Winston as the Browns' starting quarterback in Sunday's game against the Bengals, Brad Stainbrook of 247Sports.com reports. Though Winston has breathed life into a stagnant Cleveland passing attack since taking over for the injured Deshaun Watson (Achilles) as the team's starter beginning in Week 8, he's also been mistake-prone. After throwing a trio of interceptions -- including two in the end zone -- in Sunday's 21-7 loss to the Chiefs, Winston was pulled from the game midway through the fourth quarter in favor of Thompson-Robinson, who completed four of nine pass attempts for 18 yards and an interception to go with 16 yards on three carries during the Browns' final two possessions. With a 1:7 TD:INT over 12 career appearances (three starts) through two seasons in the league, Thompson-Robinson hasn't been immune to sloppy play either, the 3-11 Browns are presumably eager to get an extended evaluation of the 25-year-old as the season winds down to determine if he's a long-term fit on the roster. While he brings much more rushing upside to the table than Winston, Thompson-Robinson likely represents a major downgrade for the Cleveland passing game and makes pass catchers such as Jerry Jeudy, Elijah Moore and David Njoku (hamstring) difficult to deploy in fantasy lineups with much confidence.
Uncertain status Week 16

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski has not committed to Thompson-Robinson as the starter for Week 16 against the Bengals, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. "We're still putting [Sunday's] game to bed," Stefanski said. Thompson-Robinson came on in relief of Jameis Winston in Sunday's 21-7 loss to the Chiefs. Winston threw three interceptions and was pulled in the fourth quarter. Thompson-Robinson also threw a pick on one of the two drives he engineered. Winston's had an issue taking care of the ball, having thrown 12 interceptions (and two fumbles lost) over his seven starts. Stefanski may not consider Thompson-Robinson as the Browns' preferred quarterback of the present or future, but he's under contract for another two seasons while Winston becomes a free agent during the offseason.
Enters for benched starter

Thompson-Robinson completed four of nine passes for 18 yards, rushed three times for 16 yards and threw an interception in Sunday's 21-7 loss to Kansas City. Thompson-Robinson relieved Jameis Winston, who threw multiple interceptions for a third consecutive week while leading an offense that gained just 228 yards over 12 drives. However, Thompson-Robinson didn't do any better in his two series. It was the second-year pro out of UCLA's most significant action since Week 7, when he entered for an injured Deshaun Watson (Achilles) and threw two interceptions. In two NFL seasons, Thompson-Robinson has thrown seven interceptions in 75 drop-backs. Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski has not indicated if there will be a shift at quarterback in Week 16, but it makes sense the club would give DTR a longer look as it plays out the final three weeks, as he has a better chance of being part of the 2025 roster than pending free agent Winston does.
