Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos’ playoff push took a hit when they lost to the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 16. But his goal of leading the Broncos to the Super Bowl remains in play, and he could see Teddy Bridgewater if he gets there.

Bridgewater is signing with the Detroit Lions, the NFC Super Bowl favorite, per FanDuel.

The No. 32 overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, Bridgewater was also the first black QB named the Broncos’ Week 1 starter. He retired following the 2023 season with the Lions.

“Comeback: High school state championship-winning coach and NFL QB Teddy Bridgewater is coming out of retirement and is expected to sign with the #Lions, sources tell The Insiders,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on X on December 26.

“Bridgewater appeared on @nflnetwork and revealed his plans to play again. Back to Detroit.”

“That’s the plan, man. My team knows that’s the plan. We wanted to win the state championship and then go back to the league. See what happens and then come back February in the offseason. Continue to coach high school football. So we’ll see how it plays out,” Bridgewater told “The Insiders” panel on December 17.

“Right now I’m enjoying this state championship, man, and we’ll see how it all plays out.”

Teddy Bridgewater to Backup Former No. 1 Pick, Mentor Maligned Youngster

Teddy Bridgewater, Dan Campbell

GettyHead coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions talks to Teddy Bridgewater #10 before a game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Bridgewater was 7-7 in his lone season as the Broncos starter. He also owns a 33-32 record as QB1 in his career. But he is back in a familiar role with the Lions. It combines his playing and coaching skills as a backup for the Lions.

Detroit has former No. 1 pick (2016) and Super Bowl QB Jared Goff entrenched as their starter. Bridgewater can still operate as a sounding board and go-between with the coaching staff.

The Lions also have former third-round pick Hendon Hooker, who Bridgewater has mentored.

Like Bridgewater, Hooker suffered a serious knee injury. The youngster praised the veteran journeyman for teaching him “how to be a pro.”

“He’s really kind of brought me into his circle, and it’s a blessing,” Hooker said, per MLive’s Kyle Meinke in January 2024. “Teddy’s been my mentor this whole year, and I’m going to continue to work with Teddy this offseason. Really just follow him around, take mental notes, little tidbits that the naked eye might not see, or coach might not see. Teddy’s been in those positions where he’s been on the field and in control.”

Both of the Broncos’ backup QBs, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, are free agents in 2025.

Perhaps a reunion with Bridgewater would make sense for the Broncos, who have Bo Nix entrenched as QB1.

Teddy Bridgewater Would Make Fine Mentor for Broncos QB Bo Nix

Jarrett Stidham, Bo Nix, Zach Wilson, Denver Broncos

GettyJarrett Stidham #8, Bo NIx #10, and Zach Wilson #4 of the Denver Broncos on the field during OTAs.

Stidham’s presence for Nix was good with the latter having a year under Broncos head coach Sean Payton and experience under another demanding head coach, Bill Belichick, to his credit entering this season.

Wilson was the No. 2 overall pick who saw the weight of an organization’s (New York Jets) failures fall on his shoulders.

Bridgewater could help Nix too.

Bridgewater overcame similar questions about his ability to make all the necessary throws, particularly deep, that Nix faces. The former’s decision not to wear gloves on his pro day, as was typical for him, only amplified those concerns.

Bridgewater, a Pro Bowler in 2015, averages 7.3 yards per attempt for his career ahead of his comeback.

That would rank 17th in the NFL through the Christmas Day games in Week 17 this season, putting Bridgewater just behind Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford, a Super Bowl winner.

Two weeks ago, the Denver Broncos and their fans were doing the equivalent of dropping the ball before they crossed the goal line — celebrating a playoff berth without a playoff berth actually clinched.

In reality, Broncos fans were celebrating what was then a 91 percent chance of making the playoffs … which dropped to 77 percent following a Week 16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Broncos, who are 9-6, can still clinch a playoff berth with a win in Week 17 on the road against the red-hot Cincinnati Bengals. They’ll be looking for a boost with the presumptive return of starting cornerback Riley Moss from a knee injury. Moss was hurt against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12 and it’s kept him out the last 3 games.

“Moss was listed as a full participant in practice on Tuesday’s injury report,” Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper wrote on December 24. “Moss has missed the last three games with a knee injury, but his move to full participation would seem to be a good sign of his availability for Saturday’s game against the Bengals.”

Broncos Face One of NFL’s Hottest Teams

The return of Moss comes at a time when the Broncos need everyone in their secondary to play their best game of the year as they face the NFL’s leading passer in Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow and the NFL’s leading receiver in Ja’Marr Chase.

They’ll also have to contend with another star at wide receiver in Tee Higgins, who has 58 receptions for 727 yards and 7 touchdowns in just 10 games and is in line to become one of the NFL’s highest paid players at his position in free agency following the season.

Thankfully for the Broncos, they’ll not only have Moss but they also have the NFL’s top cornerback in Patrick Surtain II, who is having a season for the ages and is a candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

From NFL on CBS: “Patrick Surtain II has allowed a passer rating of 39.1 when targeted this season. A QB’s passer rating would be higher if they threw it into the ground on each pass (39.6).”

Moss Called One of ‘NFL’s Best Young Cornerbacks’

Moss started all 12 games for the Broncos before his injury, with 71 tackles, 1 interception and 1 tackle for loss.

Sports Illustrated’s Chad Evans called Moss “one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks” just 5 games into the regular season and after the Broncos defeated the Raiders in Week 5 — a game in which Moss recorded his first career interception.

The Broncos selected Moss in the third round (No. 83 overall) out of Iowa in the 2023 NFL draft. He was a 2-time All-Big Ten pick in 2021 and 2022 and the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 2021.

“There’s no question that Moss is having himself a year,” Evans wrote. “The 2023 third-round draft pick out of Iowa is in his first year as a starter, and the early returns have been near-on spectacular. In tandem with Surtain’s production, the Broncos are giddy. In the Broncos’ 34-18 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Moss was pivotal. He had two passes defensed and notched the first interception of his career, as the Broncos smothered the Raiders’ two quarterbacks. Between Moss and Surtain, the Broncos’ cornerback duo totaled three interceptions.”

The Denver Broncos will get to enjoy the holidays with their families while former starting quarterback Russell Wilson continues his push for the playoffs.

Willson and the Pittsburgh Steelers are set to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 17. Before that though, Wilson played the role of Santa Claus, handing out gifts to some of his Steelers teammates.

The total value of the gifts was well over $140,000.

“Russell Wilson with a ridiculous holiday gift package to his entire offensive line!” Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz posted on X on December 24.

“Russ gifted his 14 O-Linemen with this: A $10,000 Airbnb gift card that can be used anywhere around the globe, a Louis Vuitton duffel bag in the iconic Steelers colors, custom-made Steelers Good Man Brand shoes (Russ’s premium men’s clothing brand), [and] a bottle of his wife Ciara’s TenToOne Rum.”

Notably, Wilson is playing on a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Steelers.

However, the Broncos are also paying Wilson $37 million this season. They took a $85 million dead cap hit after they cut him before he began his five-year, $245 million contract.

Russell Wilson Set for Big Pay After Broncos’ Historic Roster Move

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos

GettyRussell Wilson #3 of the Pittsburgh Steelers takes the field against the Baltimore Ravens.

Wilson and Broncos head coach Sean Payton failed to mesh, resulting in a costly decision for the organization.

“The $53 million for 2024, which includes Wilson’s fully guaranteed $39 million 2024 base salary from the five-year, $245 million contract extension he signed in August 2022, is an NFL record of dead money related an individual player in one league year,” CBS Sports’ Joel Corry wrote on December 4. “The other $32 million is a 2025 salary cap charge for the Broncos because of the post-June 1 designation.”

After going 11-19 in his Broncos tenure, Wilson has guided the Steelers to a 6-3 record. They have a clear path to the postseason with two weeks to go in the regular season. He could be in for another big contract after the season.

“The one-year, $1.2 million deal Wilson signed with the Steelers (while still collecting $37.8 million from Denver on his previous deal) ranks as the biggest bargain in the league this season,” The Athletic’s Mike Sando wrote on December 5.

“Wilson’s passing production in six starts projects to 4,706 yards with 28 touchdowns and nine interceptions over a 17-game schedule. The final five games deliver some difficult defenses, but with the Steelers all but assured a playoff berth, Wilson has a great opportunity to make Pittsburgh his longer-term home.”

Russell Wilson Gets Bad News on Steelers Future

Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Denver Broncos

GettyRussell Wilson #3 and Justin Fields #2 of the Pittsburgh Steelers warm up before a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilson has enjoyed a resurgent season. But the Steelers will likely keep their options open and explore the quarterback market this coming offseason.

“Teams expected to be in the quarterback market this offseason include the Steelers, Jets, Giants, Raiders, Saints, Browns and Titans,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on December 21. “As usual, there aren’t enough quarterbacks for everyone.”

That could mean Wilson ends up back with the Steelers.

The only other quarterbacks on the roster are Justin Fields and Kyle Allen, who are also a free agents after the season. Wilson almost certainly would like more assurance heading into the offseason.

Fortunately for the Broncos, they have sorted out their quarterback situation, replacing Wilson with rookie first-round pick Bo Nix. That has allowed them to push for the postseason despite carrying the nine-time Pro Bowler’s exorbitant cap charge.

The post Broncos’ $96 Million All-Pro CB Registers Insane Passer Rating Stat appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
The Denver Broncos paid cornerback Patrick Surtain II like he was one of the NFL’s best defensive players before the season, signing him to the largest contract for his position in NFL history with a 4-year, $96 million extension.

Surtain has spent the last 4 months making sure the franchise got what it paid for.

With the Broncos sitting at 9-6 and in the middle of a rugged AFC playoff race, NFL on CBS shared an insane statistic about Surtain’s play in 2024 that shows why he’s still in the hunt for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

From NFL on CBS: “Patrick Surtain II has allowed a passer rating of 39.1 when targeted this season. A QB’s passer rating would be higher if they threw it into the ground on each pass (39.6).”

Mull that one over for a second as Surtain cruises toward his second NFL All-Pro selection and third Pro Bowl in 4 seasons — it’s better to just throw the ball into the ground than to try and throw at Surtain.

Surtain spoke with the media ahead of the Broncos’ Week 17 road game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where the Broncos can clinch a playoff spot with a victory.

Surtan has already tied his career high with 4 interceptions and has a career high 132 return yards, with 1 interception returned for a touchdown — a thrilling 100-yard touchdown return in Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“We know what’s at stake moving forward,” Surtain said on December 24. “All we’re focused on is getting this 10th win and securing another playoff spot.”

The Broncos are trying to clinch their first playoff spot since 2015, when Denver won Super Bowl 50, and have already clinched their first winning season since 2016.

Surtain Taking Over as NFL’s Best Cornerback

Surtain has essentially ended the discussion as to who the NFL’s best cornerback is this season — his play has been the linchpin for a Broncos defense ranked ninth in the NFL after finishing 29th in 2023.

The old adage of a great player lifting his teammates to greatness has never been more on display than with Surtain in 2024. First-year starter Riley Moss has leveled up at the other cornerback. Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto is also an NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate. Defensive end Zach Allen is having an All-Pro year. Outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper signed a 4-year, $60 million contract extension on November 4.

And it all starts with Surtain, 24 years old, who has an 84 overall grade on PFF through 14 games — ranked 1st out of 217 eligible NFL cornerbacks.

Broncos, PS2 Have Work Cut Out in Week 17

What 2 weeks ago was a 91 percent chance for the Broncos to make the playoffs has dropped to 77 percent headed into Week 17 against the Bengals, who feature the NFL’s leading wide receiver in Ja’Marr Chase with 108 receptions, 1,510 yards and 16 touchdowns along with the NFL’s leading passer in Joe Burrow with 4,229 yards, 39 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

If the Broncos can’t win in Week 17, they face a final Week 18 home game against the 2-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, who could still very well be playing for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

The Denver Broncos are parting ways with one of the scapegoats of the season in veteran cornerback Levi Wallace.

Wallace signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Broncos during the 2024 offseason and leaves with over $11 million in career earnings, per Over The Cap. He is in the midst of his best season since 2020 with the Buffalo Bills, per Pro Football Focus.

His performance against the Cleveland Browns on “Monday Night Football” belied that.

According to PFF, Wallace allowed six receptions for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 targets in Week 13, mostly to former Broncos wideout Jerry Jeudy.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton indicated they could bring Wallace back.

“It’s never an easy decision,” Payton told reporters on December 24. “Hopefully, we’ll see how it goes, and we’re able to get him back.”

Jeudy posted the most receiving yards by a player against his former team in NFL history in that contest and the most in Empower Field at Mile High Stadium history. Rookie fifth-round draft pick Kris Abrams-Draine replaced Wallace to finish the game.

The Broncos made Wallace inactive in Weeks 15 and 16 following the bye week after he vowed to perform better next time out.

Broncos Coach Deflected Blame From Levi Wallace

Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos

GettyDefensive coordinator Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos looks on against the Indianapolis Colts.

“I take it all on myself,’’ Wallace told The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson in an interview published on December 12. “I don’t put the blame anywhere else. … I’ve had really good games and what I just had that was probably the worst game I played in the league. Absolutely.

Wallace drew the start versus Cleveland in place of the injured Riley Moss.

But the former started 70 of his 83 career games entering the 2024 season between the Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph covered for Wallace.

“I didn’t call a great game if he didn’t play a great game,” Joseph told reporters on December 12. “It falls on me first, never on the player. It’s my job to make his job easy. I thought we made some nice adjustments in the second half and came out with a win. For us, guys, every game’s the same. If we win, we correct. If we lose we correct. We were thankful to win a football game, and we can’t apologize for that.

“The good stuff we’ll build on and the bad we’ll fix, whoever it is.”

GettyP.J. Locke #6 and Kris Abrams-Draine #31 of the Denver Broncos break up a pass intended for Quentin Johnston #1 of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Abrams-Draine has allowed five of the 15 passes thrown into his coverage to be completed, including a 1-for-6 effort in a start against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16.

Joseph has praised the rookie’s practice habits.

“When you draft these young players at certain positions, it takes more time for those guys to develop, to get ready to play for you. Obviously, corner is a position where if you’re not ready, it could be a bad deal for you,” Joseph said.

“He’s practiced well, he’s smart, he’s engaged in meetings, he’s ready to play you know he he competed well on Monday night so the more he plays the more he’ll improve.”

The rookie intercepted Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert on “Thursday Night Football.”

Payton said Abrams-Draine was a factor in the Broncos’ decision to cut Wallace.

“Basically, you’re trying to protect your roster at certain positions. I would say with the way Kris Abrams-Draine, some of those guys have been really stepping up,” Payton said.

“Keeping a young player like Blake Watson that others are trying to – this is the time of the year where some of the teams that are maybe out of it are trying to improve, look into the future. So it’s just – it’s always difficult. It’s roster management though, and that’s hard.”

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has teased a potential shift at the starting running back spot for weeks. Broncos rookie Audric Estime may have forced his hand after his performance in Week 16.

Estime scored his first career rushing touchdown in the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He finished with 48 yards on nine carries.

His carries and yards were the second-most of his career and earned him more work.

“Yeah, I think he has [earned more playing time. I think he played well. I was encouraged with the physicality he ran with, and I think he’ll only get better,” Payton told reporters on December 22. “Even Blake [Watson] had some carries that were encouraging. So balancing that is going to be important for us here down the stretch.”

Estime and Watson’s emergence in this game could be bad news for Week 1 starter Javonte Williams. Williams has been inconsistent this season and is a free agent in 2025.

However, calls for Estime to assume the lead role have been prevalent.

The No. 147 overall pick of the 2024 draft, Estime is of a similar build as Williams. But the rookie runs with more physicality than the veteran, a third-round pick in 2021, has since his devastating knee injury in 2022.

“This was a tough loss, but it wasn’t all bad. For instance, the Broncos’ run game looked better than it has for most of the season. Denver was able to gain 110 yards on the ground on 21 carries. Bo Nix helped with 25 yards on three carries, but it was Estime who led the way. The rookie had 48 yards on nine carries, which led the team in both categories,” Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine wrote on December 23.

“Nix and the offense would benefit from a better running game, and putting Estime at the top of the depth chart could be the spark it needs.”

Estime is an economical option in Year 1 of a four-year, $4.5 million contract.

He must remain healthy after undergoing a procedure on his knee during the offseason and then landing on injured reserve with an ankle issue. Estime also battled fumbles early on, coughing the ball up twice and losing it once in his first nine career carries.

Broncos HC Sean Payton Rips Criticism Of Key Decision Loss to Chargers

Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

GettyDenver Broncos head coach Sean Payton looks on against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Broncos are 9-6 and have a clear path to making the playoffs. However, their path to their sixth loss has led to criticism of Payton.

Payton’s play calling on the Broncos’ final possession before halftime on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 16 ultimately led to a three-and-out. After the Broncos punted, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker hit a historic 57-yard fair catch free kick field goal.

The play seemingly turned the tide in the Chargers’ favor.

“One of the dumber storylines was the end of the half in regards to us being aggressive with 44 seconds, 41 seconds two timeouts. We punt the ball the half’s over with. Read more stuff that I just looked at and thought, ‘This is garbage.’ No. 1, it didn’t shift the momentum. We got the ball back to start the second half, went down the field, kicked a field goal, we were back up 11 [points],” Payton said.

“This sequence, this area of the game you’re talking about, is the area that as a coach you look at, and you get frustrated. Just with, ‘How do we put a brake on the momentum that had shifted,’ and I feel like we could have done a better job there.”

The Broncos had a 21-13 lead at the break. LA outscored Denver 21-6 in the second half, allowing 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The narrative was not Payton’s only gripe, either.

Sean Payton Calls Out TV Cameras for Call-Sheet Close-Up

Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

GettyHead coach Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos looks on against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cameras zoomed in on Payton’s call sheet during the game, focusing on the coach’s note to run the ball.

Reporters asked Payton about it during his press conference on Sunday.

“No. 1, I don’t like the fact that the network TV cameras feel like they can zoom into our call sheets. But it is what it is,” Payton said. “It’s just a reminder. Sometimes there’ll be little notes we’ll put at the top of – I’ll put at the top of a section”

Payton was also asked about the Broncos going away from the running game.

The Broncos rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries in the first half. They tallied 21 yards on eight attempts in the second.

“Thought we ran it real well early in the game, first half. Second half, there’s two series I kind of kick myself where even when we did run it, it was the type of run we ran that wasn’t as effective,” Payton said.

“But we had ample opportunities in that second half. And I thought our third-down numbers, obviously, weren’t where we wanted them to be. We couldn’t get off the field defensively. And therefore, we weren’t able to keep the lead we had going in at halftime coming out to start the second half.”

The Broncos’ early success could mean a bigger role for one player, in particular.

The Denver Broncos might have put together the NFL’s best defense in 2024 — a unit with few weaknesses from top to bottom.

One of the areas where the Broncos could use a slight upgrade is on the interior defensive line, where Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine thinks they should take a run at signing Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams in free agency

“… the depth along the defensive front is a concern,” Ballentine wrote. “Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers are good, but they’re both sort of 5-technique hybrids. D.J. Jones is a more pure defensive tackle, but the 29-year-old isn’t getting any younger. Adding Milton Williams would go a long way toward completing the group. He’ll be 26 next season and is putting together his best year yet with five sacks.”

Ballentine has sang Williams’ praises before, floating him as a potential target in free agency for multiple teams over the last month, including the New England Patriots.

“Milton Williams will be one of the best interior defenders on the market and his age (25) should make him a popular target,” Ballentine wrote on December 4.

Williams Having Breakout Season For Philly

Williams is having a breakout season for the NFL’s best defense, where he’s played in all 15 games with 6 starts, 20 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 7 TFL, 8 QB hits, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.

The Eagles selected Williams in the third round (No. 73 overall) out of Louisiana Tech in the 2021 NFL draft and he’s just 1.5 sacks from matching his sack total for the first 3 seasons of his career — and he’s doing it in the final year of his 4-year, $5.11 million rookie contract.

While most teams would like to keep a player like Williams on the roster, that’s not really an option for the Eagles, who could also lose stars like inside linebacker Zack Baun and edge rusher Josh Sweat in free agency.

The biggest reason the Eagles won’t entertain paying Williams is likely an eye to the near future when they will almost certainly have to break the bank for 2023 first round pick Jalen Carter, who plays the same position as Williams.

It’s not outside the realm of possibility that when the Eagles finally do pay Carter — likely following the 2025 season — it will have to be a deal that would make him the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in NFL history. That would mean a deal that could surpass the 5-year, $158.75 million contract extension with $95 million guaranteed signed by Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones before the 2023 season.

Williams Will Get Considerable Raise in 2025

Theoretically, Williams should garner much more than the $5.5 million total of his current contract in just the first year of his new deal. In 2024, the average salary of the Top 20 interior defensive linemen in the NFL was $23.45 million, according to Over the Cap.

Being conservative and understanding Williams isn’t going to approach the type of money headed Carter’s way, he could very well land a contract in the range of $15 million to $20 million per seasons — the Broncos could start with an offer of 3 years, $40 million and see where things go from there.

The Denver Broncos laid the groundwork for their strong 2024 season with a slew of calculated risks in the offseason. Among the most notable was the decision to trade Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns.

The Athletic reported that the Broncos were nearing a trade to send Jeudy to the New York Jets this past offseason.

Jets owner Woody Johnson stuck the deal down due to Jeudy’s “Madden” video game rating.

Jeudy, who signed a three-year, $52.5 million contract extension after the deal, called that part of the report “fake news.” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports he began receiving calls that the report was erroneous and “far from a done deal.”

“To be honest, I don’t believe it. I think that’s fake news,” Jeudy told reporters on December 19. “Why would somebody look at Madden rating? Be real. I don’t think that real, but it’s funny.”

“The talks between the Broncos and the Jets were never nearing the finish line.’ Broncos G.M. George Paton had multiple lines in the water. The Browns and Jets emerged as viable contenders. New York offered a third-day pick (likely round four) and receiver Allen Lazard,” Florio wrote on December 22.

“The Broncos weren’t interested in that package, and there was (as one source said) a “zero percent chance” the Broncos would have accepted it. Before the talks could progress beyond that offer, they abruptly ended.”

Notably, various outlets reported the Broncos’ interest in Lazard, including The Athletic.

Rosenblatt and Russini reported in November that the Jets offered Lazard and a “Day 2 pick” for Jeudy, noting that Johnson ended the talks.

Mixed Messages on Broncos Nixed Jerry Jeudy Trade

Jerry Jeudy, Denver Broncos

GettyJerry Jeudy #3 of the Cleveland Browns looks on before facing the Denver Broncos.

According to The Athletic’s latest intel, Paton was “deep” in trade talks with his former Jets counterpart, Joe Douglas, about Jeudy.

“The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why.” The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver wrote on December 19. “Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in “Madden NFL,” the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources.”

There was no love lost on Jeudy’s behalf about the failed transaction.

A spokesperson for the Jets also ripped the idea that videogame ratings would overrule the judgment of experienced professionals. However, they also acknowledged the ratings are mentioned in discussions.

“It is used as a reference point; it is not determinative,” the spokesperson said. “It’s really sad that an adult would use a misleading anecdote about teenagers to make their father look bad. It’s ridiculous, quite honestly, the idea that this was used to influence the opinion of experienced executives,” the spokesperson said, per The Athletic.

“(The sons) have no roles in the organization. It’s completely ridiculous to suggest that any outside info is intended to replace the opinions of (Woody Johnson’s) staff.”

Regardless of how involved the game ratings are, it fits a theme for the Jets, who the report revealed operate in other unorthodox ways.

One of the trades they completed with the Broncos this past offseason, sending former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson included a notable stipulation. The Broncos wanted the No. 257 pick of the 2024 draft.

The Jets insisted on keeping it and wound up doing so. They selected safety Jaylen Key.

However, they waived him in October. He is now a member of the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. The Jets may need to find another QB.

Bo Nix has already set the Denver Broncos franchise rookie records for passing attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns. Making his 15th start in Week 16 against Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers, Nix set another Broncos record.

It is a strong start for Nix, who entered the NFL as the most experienced QB in NCAA history.

However, former Broncos offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus says there is a ceiling to what kind of player Nix can be.

“I’m not down on Bo Nix, I like bo Nix, but last night we watched one team driving a Lamborgini at the QB position and another driving a Toyota Camry,” Polumbus posted on X on December 20. “You like your Camry, it gets you from point A to B. You never feel like you need a better car because it is trusty and reliable…. but it ain’t a Lamborgini….at least its not a Lamborgini yet….

“(Don’t ask me how a Camry turns into a Lambo…the analogy made sense in my head).”

Polumbus is a Denver native. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos in 2008. He spent his final NFL season as a reserve on the Broncos Super Bowl team.

Polumbus also hosts “Mount Polumbus Speaks” on YouTube and has touted Nix as special in the past. But he clearly believes the QB has limitations to his game, and that he is benefitting from his situation.

Super Bowl 50 Champion: Broncos Outcoached After Halftime

Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

GettyHead coach Jim Harbaugh of the Los Angeles Chargers speaks with Head coach Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos.

Polumbus points to coaching to explain why Nix and Los have such similar production despite the difference in their ceilings.

“Doubling down on my nonsensical analogy the requires a metamorphosis from a Camry into a Lambo….,” Polumbus said in a follow-up post. “The irony of the situation is the [Chargers head coach Jim] Harbaugh drives his Lambo like a Camry and Sean Payton attempts to drive his Camry like a Lambo….”

The Broncos are 0-2 against the Chargers this season and 9-4 against the rest of their slate.

Broncos brass will likely take that kind of progress from Nix coming off an 8-9 season in 2023, going 7-8 with a nine-time Pro Bowler in Russell Wilson. But it underscores a point Polumbus made during the game.

“When you can’t find a player that blew it, when you can’t point to a play or two that blew it, when one team started out physical in the run game, yet the other team is the one that finished with the run game there is really only one place to point the finger….,” Polumbus posted following the game on December 19. “We got out coached mid game. Simple as that.

“Chargers adjusted. We did not.”

Polumbus’ remarks are especially striking considering Payton’s decision to be aggressive, passing on the first two plays on the penultimate possession of the first half. Payton’s decision led to a punt, affording Harbaugh a chance to make a historic decision.

The Chargers chose to attempt a free kick, and kicker Cameron Dicker connected on a 57-yard try. It was the first successful attempt in 48 years and Harbaugh said it was his favorite rule.

Both coaches said their teams practice the scenario but it cost the Broncos in Week 16.

Nix completed 72.3% of his passes for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns in the loss to the Chargers in Week 16.

It was Nix’s fourth-highest completion percentage in a single game this season.

His counterpart, Herbert, completed 74.2% of his passes for 284 yards with 2 TDs and 1 pick. Both players were sacked once each. But Herbert came away with the most important stat of all, a win, which helped his team’s playoff chances.

Herbert, Nix’s fellow former Oregon Duck who is in his fifth season after being the No. 6 pick in 2020, averaged more yards per attempt and completion.

His passer rating was also 3.5 points higher than the Broncos QB.

Denver police have made another arrest in the investigation of a shooting involving former Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds, per 9News Mike Klis.

The Broncos parted ways with the 2024 offseason free-agent addition in November, Reynolds, after the veteran’s extended stay on injured reserve for a finger injury. But his tenure also included a shooting following “Thursday Night Football” in Week 7.

“Daniel Olivarez, 30, was taken into custody on Dec. 16, according to court records,” Klis wrote on December 20. “He’s being held on suspicion of the following felonies: Six counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of attempted first-degree assault, three counts of illegally discharging a firearm, six counts of weapon used during a violent crime, [and] four counts of violent crime causing death or serious bodily injury.”

Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed the shooting in his opening statement in Week 8.

According to Klis, Olivarez is being held on a $300,000 cash-only bond and is due in court on December 24. Olivarez joins Luis Mendoza, 35, and Burr Charlesworth, 42, as suspects charged in the shooting, which took place following Reynolds’ party’s exit from a strip club.

“Reynolds was at the wheel of his Ford Bronco early the morning of Oct. 18 when people in another vehicle opened fire on them along Interstate 25 near Colorado Boulevard,” Klis reported in October. “Reynolds tried to outrun his pursuers, but they followed him for several minutes and continued to shoot, according to court documents.”

Mendoza remained held on an identical bond as Olivarez while Charlesworth posted his $100,000 bail and was released as of that report.

The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed Reynolds, taking some financial responsibility from the Broncos. This gave the wideout a fresh start after his traumatic experience. Despite overcoming his finger injury, Reynolds remained on injured reserve until his release.

Reynolds said the Broncos helped him “a lot” throughout the process

“It was tough for a few weeks. But I had a good support system behind me. A lot of the organization over there [in Denver] was helping me out a lot. So they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process,” Reynolds told reporters in Jacksonville on December 6.

“That’s kind of one of the things I’d rather you put behind me. But anybody going through that, man, it’s a crazy ordeal. … I’m just blessed to be here.”

Reynolds was excited to join the Broncos, citing Payton as the reason.

Full details of Reynolds’ injuries have not been released, nor has he revealed them. The initial report of the shooting said that Reynolds sustained gunshot wounds to the “arm” and “head,” though.

Reynolds suited up for the Jaguars for the first time in a 32-25 loss to the New York Jets in Week 16 after the Broncos waived him.

He drew one target but was unable to come down with it.

“[A] new place is always going to bring its challenges. But I’m excited to have them show interest in and want me here. So it’s awesome,” Reynolds said during his first Jags presser. “That’s kind of one of the biggest things that’s helped me along the way so far, is just kind of experience with [changing teams mid-season]. It should help out a little bit.”

https://twitter.com/1010XL/status/1868338329076588565

Reynolds, who turns 30 years old in February, has caught 12 passes for 183 yards and 1 touchdown this season. He still has one more year on his two-year, $9 million contract that he initially signed to join the Broncos.

Bo Nix could only watch as the Los Angeles Chargers marched down the field for the game-sealing drive in their 34-27 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16. Nix and the Broncos had put up 21 points in the first half.

However, the Chargers, who swept the season series with the win, answered with 21 unanswered points. The Broncos could only muster six points the rest of the way.

When asked how he leads the team after a loss like this, Nix remained confident.

“The good thing is my role is going to be pretty simple, because every guy – everybody in that locker room – every guy wants to already play next week,” Nix told reporters on December 19. “I think at this point, we’re all competitively frustrated, and I think we’re excited for this opportunity. We know this next one’s the most important, and we just want to, I think, go out next week and not feel this way again.”

Furthermore, Nix remained on the same page about Broncos head coach Sean Payton’s decision to call passes on the first two plays on Denver’s drive that preceded the Chargers’ historic fair catch free kick before halftime.

“I think every offense in the league is trying to go score.” Nix said about the costly sequence.

Next up for the Broncos are the Cincinnati Bengals, who are 6-8 and have the No. 31 scoring defense. But the Bengals also boast Joe Burrow guiding the league’s No. 5 scoring offense.

Bo Nix Voices Frustration After Broncos’ 2nd Loss to Chargers

Nix completed 72.5% of his passes for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns with 0 interceptions in the loss. The Broncos’ 245 total passing yards (minus lost sack yardage) is the fourth most the Chargers have allowed this season.

Denver’s 355 total yards are the fifth-most LA, who boast the No. 3 scoring defense in the NFL, has allowed in a game this season.

For Nix, the loss overshadowed his performance as he echoed his teammates’ sentiments.

“Same, just frustrated. The difference in our two games with them has been 7 points. And just got to find a way to get the ball in the end zone one more time. And that’s the frustrating part, is the difference the margin for error is 1 touchdown. It’s just – we should be able to find a way to get 1 touchdown,” Nix said.

“Fortunately, we got another part of the season. You got to go out there and do it again. And then, it’s just we kind of found ways to almost beat ourselves tonight. We just had many opportunities and just didn’t capitalize.”

Bo Nix Goes Viral in Postgame Moment With Chargers Star

Nix and Chargers QB Justin Herbert share a common background as former Oregon Ducks quarterbacks. But Nix went viral after the game for his postgame moment with another Chargers star on the other side of the ball.

Nix and Chargers safety Derwin James exchanged jerseys on the field following the Broncos’ loss.

The two players did not face each other in college when James attended Florida State.

However, James finished the game with 5 total tackles. It was his first outing without at least 6 tackles and or a sack since Week 10. His team also walked away victorious and overtook the Broncos for the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff race.

Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos lost to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15, and the turning point of the game was the 57-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker before halftime. But to even get to that point, Broncos cornerback Tremon Smith made a costly mistake.

Smith, the gunner on the punt team, ran into Chargers return man Derius Davis, gifting the Chargers 15 yards and a chance to cut into what was a 21-10 lead before the break.

Payton said, “The penalty wasn’t real smart.”

“Typically you’d be pretty conservative,” Payton told reporters on December 19. “We didn’t get any momentum going there. We just ran the ball and punted it. The penalty puts them in a position.

“Doesn’t happen much. We practice it all the time. Well in that situation, the penalty put them in field goal position. So it’s disappointing.”

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said it was his “favorite rule.”

Payton has faced questions about running the clock out before the break. But he pointed to the timeout situation, percentages of being successful, and their field position as reasons he opted to punt the ball away and play defense.

Harbaugh also told reporters he wanted to get those tries in every game, pointing to Phil Dawson’s 71-yard attempt during the duo’s time with the San Francisco 49ers. Dawson missed.

Dicker’s successful attempt was the first such make since the 1976 season.

When asked if he considered going for it on fourth down rather than punting the ball back to the Chargers, Payton explained why he opted against that. He noted the “timeouts,” “percentages,” and “field position.”

Payton also said the Broncos’ No. 8-ranked defense (and No. 1 scoring defense), “Couldn’t get them stopped.”

“Obviously, look, a disappointing loss. It was disappointing because there was a lot at stake, and we know that. We had a fast start; [I] was encouraged by that. And then, uncharacteristically this season, we didn’t finish or play nearly well enough in the second half; both offensively and defensively,” Payton said.

“Credit Los Angeles for fighting their way back in, and we didn’t make enough plays in the end.”

Super Bowl Champion Swings Momentum for Chargers in Broncos Loss

Tremon Smith, Denver Broncos

GettyTremon Smith #1 of the Denver Broncos looks on against the New Orleans Saints.

Smith, who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, is in his second season with the Broncos, signing a two-year, $5 million contract in free agency during the 2023 offseason.

The Broncos could cut him at a gain financially if Payton wanted.

According to Over The Cap, they would save $2.5 million with $700,000 in dead cap space. Or, the Broncos could make him inactive in Week 16 as they have done with former fill-in starter Levi Wallace.

Wallace was inactive for the second consecutive week following his role in a historic performance from the Cleveland Browns against the Broncos in Week 13.

Smith’s role as a special teamer could make for an easier decision for Payton and the Broncos.

“At the end of the half, you know as a coach you’re starting with the ball,” Payton said in response to another question about momentum. “We’re going to see if we can get a little momentum, maybe, and then run the clock down. The penalty wasn’t real smart.”

Sean Payton Calls Out Broncos Coaches Over Penalties

Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

GettyHead coach Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos reacts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Payton turned his ire to himself and the Broncos coaching staff, saying they had to do a better job after Denver was flagged for multiple penalties in critical moments.

The head coach said the miscues “cost us.”

“It keeps continuing, so we got to do a better job coaching because it’s not like it’s new. And so it’ll cost you. It’ll cost you in games,” Payton said. “We got to make the corrections in this game right and then we get back to getting ready to play Cincinnati, so. We got to find a way to get the 10th win; we know that.”

Payton and the Broncos will host the Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. The Bengals got a boost to their playoff chances with the outcome of “Thursday Night Football” and another example of how to attack the Broncos’ defense.

The Chargers tallied 380 net total yards in Week 16.

Broncos Fulfilled Bizarre Request in Trade for No. 2 Overall Pick https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/denver-broncos/zach-wilson-trade-bizarre-request/?adt_ei=[email] https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/denver-broncos/zach-wilson-trade-bizarre-request/#respond Fri, 20 Dec 2024 11:20:48 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=5225181 The Denver Broncos fulfilled an odd request by the New York Jets in the trade for backup QB and former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson.

The post Broncos Fulfilled Bizarre Request in Trade for No. 2 Overall Pick appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
When the Denver Broncos traded with the New York Jets for quarterback Zach Wilson in May 2024, the most notable part about the exchange was that the Jets had actually found a trade partner for the former No. 2 overall pick.

The paltry sum of the exchange was just a footnote at the time — Wilson and a 2024 seventh round pick (No. 256 overall) in exchange for a 2024 sixth round pick (No. 203 overall).

A footnote until an article from The Athletic’s Diana Russini, Mike Silver and Zach Rosenblatt on December 19 exposed a bizarre detail of the trade. The Broncos had initially requested the latter of two seventh round picks owned by the Jets, which was the final spot in the draft — the “Mr. Irrelevant” slot at No. 257 overall.

The Jets refused. They wanted the worse of the 2 picks.

From The Athletic: “When the Jets traded Zach Wilson to the Broncos, Denver asked for the final pick of April’s draft (257th overall) in the deal. Woody Johnson told Joe Douglas to trade No. 256 instead. He wanted to pick the next Brock Purdy.”

Purdy, the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was famously drafted with the final pick of the seventh round (No. 262 overalL) in the 2022 NFL draft and has blossomed into a Pro Bowler.

The Jets used the final pick on Alabama safety Jaylen Key, who didn’t make the 53-man roster and is not even on the practice squad. The Broncos selected South Carolina offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo, who is on the team’s active roster.

Broncos, Jets Had Another Strange Trade Moment

The Wilson trade wasn’t even the strangest moment the Broncos had with the Jets in 2024.

The Athletic’s article also laid out a potential trade between the Broncos and Jets in which Denver wide receiver Jerry Jeudy seemed headed to New York until Johnson nixed the trade because Jeudy’s rating in the Madden NFL video game was too low.

From The Athletic: “… Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in ‘Madden NFL,’ the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources. The Broncos ultimately traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns. Last Sunday, Jeudy crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career.”

Wilson Has Resurrected Career in Denver

By all accounts, Wilson has resurrected his career in Denver after bottoming out in 3 seasons with the Jets where he 12-21 as a starter and threw more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23).

With Denver and under head coach Sean Payton, Wilson has been a dutiful backup and served as the Broncos’ third emergency quarterback for all 14 games behind rookie starter and fellow first round pick Bo Nix and veteran Jarrett Stidham.

Wilson is in the final year of the 4-year, $35.1 million contract he signed in 2021. Wilson will likely find a new home in 2025 as a backup or fill-in starter for a team with a young quarterback — something in the range of the 1-year, $6 million contract Marcus Mariota signed with the Washington Commanders in March 2024.

The Denver Broncos fell on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football,” and they can thank a historic decision by the home team for helping shift the momentum of the contest. Moreover, it was something they had practiced.

Staked to a 21-10 lead, the Broncos attempted to run the clock out in the second half. But Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh called a timeout to get the ball back for his team.

Broncos gunner Tremon Smith interfered with Chargers return man Derius Davis’ fair catch.

As a result, the Chargers got an untimed down and, after first sending Justin Herbert and the offense out, opted for a “fair catch kick. ” A fair catch kick is a field goal attempt following any fair catch call during which the opponent cannot attempt to block.

The Chargers outscored the Broncos 21-6 after halftime, with LA’s points coming consecutively.

The loss prevented the Broncos from snapping their nine-year drought and clinching a playoff spot. They will try again in Week 17 against Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, who said he would be keeping tabs on the game with his team needing some help to make the playoffs.

Cincinnati is 6-8 on the season, but Burrow entered Week 16 leading the NFL in completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes. They also got a boost from the Broncos’ loss.

It is a daunting matchup for a suddenly leaky Broncos defense missing Riley Moss again.

Chargers Snap 48-Year-Old NFL Drought Against Broncos

Cameron Dicker, Jim Harbaugh

GettyHead coach Jim Harbaugh of the Los Angeles Chargers congratulates Cameron Dicker #11 after his successful field goal against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“In 1976, Ray Wersching was kicking for, of all teams, the Chargers. And It was against Buffalo, and it ended the first half,” Al Michaels said during the broadcast on December 19. “Every half a century, this comes into play.”

Joey Slye was the last player to attempt a fair catch free kick during an NFL game.

That was in 2019 when he was a rookie with the Carolina Panthers. His 60-yard attempt against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell short and the Panthers lost the game 20-14.

Broncos kicker Wil Lutz was 2-for-2 on the night, and he connected on all three of his point after attempts.

That is likely little solace for the Broncos after the loss, though.

Sean Payton Gets Honest About ‘Free Kick Situation’

Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

GettyDenver Broncos head coach Sean Payton looks on during against the Indianapolis Colts.

TNF’s Kaylee Hartung asked Broncos head coach Sean Payton what he thought about the play, and he said his team practices such scenarios.

“Well, it’s a fair catch, free kick situation. We practice it,” Payton told Hartung before walking off the field into the locker room at halftime. “He’s got the leg. So I think, look, the penalty put them in range.”

Payton called the play “disappointing.” Harbaugh called it his “favorite rule.”

The Broncos could have more offensive success against a porous Bengals defense.

However, they close the season against the reining champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos cannot afford a letdown that costs them their unexpected postseason berth.

The only way that happens is if the Broncos lose out. But as their loss to the Chargers on “Thursday Night Football” showed, even rare plays can make big impacts in games with significant stakes.

The Denver Broncos can all but secure a playoff spot with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football, and the outcome is of personal interest to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow’s Bengals’ playoff hopes are on life support amid a 6-8 record and need a little help from the Broncos despite an MVP-caliber season from the QB.

Burrow spoke openly about what was at stake.

“Big game tomorrow,” Burrow told reporters on December 18. “You pay attention. Usually, just after your game, you go and check [to see if] things happen that you needed to happen. This is the time of year that you’re always paying attention to that, whether you’re in our spot or whether it’s seeding and you’re already in the playoffs.”

Burrow – who guided the Bengals to the Super Bowl in his second season – leads the NFL in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns entering Week 16.

He did not shy away from the reason behind the team’s current plight.

“We haven’t been good enough at the beginning of the year, that’s no secret,” Burrow said. “We started pretty similarly every single year, and that’s disappointing. There’s always been a large emphasis put on that at the beginning of the year. And you get behind the eight-ball, and then you have some injuries, and you get in a bad spot. So we got to be better in those spots at the beginning, for sure.”

Broncos Did What Joe Burrow, Bengals Could Not

Joe Burrow, Denver Broncos

GettyJoe Burrow #9 of the Cincinnati Bengals warms up before a game against the Tennessee Titans.

Like the Bengals, the Broncos began the season 0-2, losing each of their first two matchups by 1 touchdown or less.

What happened after that has been the difference between one team being 6-8 and on the verge of being eliminated from postseason elimination and the other being 9-5 with full control of their playoff chances.

The Broncos’ defense helped them navigate the early rookie woes of quarterback Bo Nix.

Cincy’s defense, which ranks 29th in yards allowed and 31st in scoring, has not been able to support what Burrow and the offense have done.

Just as the Bengals need help to get into the playoffs, the Broncos would need aid in missing out. Not only would the Broncos have to lose out the rest of the way, but one of the Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, or Miami Dolphins would need to win out.

Indy and Miami have the first and fourth-easiest remaining schedules, respectively, per Tankathon. The Bengals have the 15th-toughest slate while the Broncos’ slate ranks seventh.

The stakes could be high when the two teams meet in Week 17.

Broncos On Track for Playoff Showdown With Russell Wilson

The Broncos are the No. 7 seed entering Week 16. If everything remains the same the rest of the way, they will face former starting QB Russell Wilson on Super Wild Card weekend.

The Broncos made the financially costly decision to cut Wilson this past offseason.

They incurred the largest single dead cap charge in NFL history at $85 million (over two years). Wilson has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 6-2 record since resuming his role as a starter in Week 7.

A win in Week 16, when the Steelers visit the Baltimore Ravens, will match his best mark of seven wins, which he set in 2023.

The Denver Broncos boast the No. 1 scoring defense and the No. 8 unit in terms of yards allowed entering Week 16. A player like Dre Greenlaw could add even more to the group.

Denver’s strong play is a massive turnaround from their showing in 2023 sparked by an offseason featuring sweeping changes on the defensive side of the ball. But there is more work to be done this coming offseason, specifically at inside linebacker.

Alex Singleton and Levelle Bailey are the Broncos’ only inside backers under contract for 2025.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine believes the Broncos should target the San Francisco 49ers star and pending free agent, Greenlaw.

“The Broncos have to be considered the breakout unit of the 2024 season,” Ballentine wrote on December 16. “They were ranked toward the bottom last season in both points and yards allowed. This year, they are in the top 10 by both metrics. A lot of that is due to a group of pass-rushers that took a step forward and a strong secondary. The middle of the defense could still use more juice.”

“Dre Greenlaw has missed most of this season, but made his return to the Niners lineup on Thursday Night Football. He should be even better next season with more time to recover from the torn Achilles he suffered last postseason.”

Greenlaw ranks 18th in combined tackles over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

That is notable considering he also plays alongside a star in Fred Warner. Greenlaw has also started 55 of his 63 career games. Greenlaw missed all but three regular season games in 2021 with a groin injury. But he returned for the postseason.

Dre Greenlaw Has 1 Wish for Christmas

Dre Greenlaw, Denver Broncos

GettyDre Greenlaw #57 of the San Francisco 49ers warms up before a game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Greenlaw, a fifth-round pick (No. 148 overall) in the 2019 draft, has spent his entire career with the 49ers. He told reporters on December 18 that he is not worried about his pending free agency, instead focusing on “whipping Miami’s a**” in Week 16.

However, Greenlaw did joke about the most desired gift on his Christmas wishlist: “some money.”

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested the organization will fight to keep Greenlaw.

Greenlaw is in the final year of a two-year, $16.4 million contract. According to Over The Cap, he has earned over $12 million in his career.

The 49ers are 6-8 and their chances of making the postseason are less than 1% entering Week 16, per NFL.com’s playoff picture. They have some looming salary cap concerns, but front offices routinely create room when needed.

OTC projects the Broncos to have $57.6 million in 2025, which should be enough to fit Greenlaw.

Broncos Could Need LB Like Dre Greenlaw

Alex Singleton, Cody Barton, Denver Broncos

GettyAlex Singleton #49 and Cody Barton #55 of the Denver Broncos celebrate after a safety against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Broncos also boast a pair of top-20 tacklers over the past two seasons in Singleton and Cody Barton. Singleton tore his ACL in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is out for the year.

He still has one more year on his three-year, $18 million deal, and the Broncos would incur a bigger dead cap hit than they would benefit from the savings.

He should be back for one spot, though he will be 32 years old and coming off a serious injury.

Barton spent the 2022 season with the Seattle Seahawks and, in 2023, was with the Washington Commanders. He signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Broncos in free agency during the 2024 offseason and is due for a decent raise.

Meanwhile, the Broncos like Bailey. But he has logged just five defensive snaps all season, per Pro Football Reference. Greenlaw could be a sound fix for a looming issue.

Report: Jets Nixed Trade for Broncos WR Over Low ‘Madden NFL’ Rating https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/denver-broncos/jerry-jeudy-trade-low-madden-rating/?adt_ei=[email] https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/denver-broncos/jerry-jeudy-trade-low-madden-rating/#respond Thu, 19 Dec 2024 16:27:04 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=5224574 The Athletic reports that a potential trade between the Broncos and Jets for WR Jerry Jeudy was nixed over low "Madden NFL" rating.

The post Report: Jets Nixed Trade for Broncos WR Over Low ‘Madden NFL’ Rating appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
In the realm of the dumbest and weirdest things that have ever happened in the history of NFL trades (and non-trades), this one has to be right up there.

In a report from The Athletic’s Mike Silver, Diana Russini and Zack Rosenblatt on the disfunction within the New York Jets organization under owner Woody Johnson, one portion detailed how Johnson nixed a trade between the Denver Broncos and the Jets for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy over Jeudy’s low rating in the most recent edition of the “Madden NFL” video game franchise.

From The Athletic: “… (Joe) Douglas and his Broncos counterpart, George Paton, were deep in negotiations for a trade that would have sent Jeudy to the Jets and given future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers another potential playmaker. The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why. Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in ‘Madden NFL,’ the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources. The Broncos ultimately traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns. Last Sunday, Jeudy crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career.”

Jeudy was a first round pick (No. 15 overall) by the Broncos out of Alabama in the 2020 NFL draft and played 4 seasons for the Broncos, with his best season in Denver coming in 2022 with 67 receptions for 972 yards and 6 touchdowns.

The Broncos eventually traded Jeudy to the Browns in March 2024 in exchange for a 2024 fifth round pick and 2024 sixth round pick, both of which they eventually traded. Within days of the trade, the Browns signed Jeudy to a 3-year, $52.5 million contract extension.

In Jeudy’s return to Denver in Week 13, he set an NFL single-game record for most receiving yards against a former team with 9 receptions for 235 yards and 1 touchdown — a game the Broncos won 41-32.

Jets Have Longest Postseason Drought in Pro Sports

The Jets are 4-10 and have the longest current postseason drought in North American pro sports, which sits at 14 seasons after falling flat in 2024.

The Jets not only fired Douglas, their general manager, but also fired head coach Robert Saleh just 5 games into the season. The Athletic’s article makes it clear that at the heart of the Jets’ problems is Johnson, who purchased the team for $635 million in 2000.

In August 2024, Forbes valued the Jets franchise at $6.9 billion.

From The Athletic: “Another offseason of turnover awaits, and at the root of the franchise’s problems is Johnson, who was characterized as an over-involved, impulsive owner in conversations with more than 20 people in and around the Jets organization — current and former players, coaches and team executives — who were granted anonymity in order to speak openly without fear of reprisal.”

Jets, Broncos Moved On and Did Another Trade

While the Jets and Broncos didn’t make the Jeudy trade, they did get together for another deal. In April 2024, the Jets traded quarterback Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2021, to the Broncos along with a 2024 seventh round pick in exchange for a 2024 sixth round pick.

The Denver Broncos have a storied history at running back with many talented players coming through Mile High Stadium. One of them is former third-round (No. 71 overall in 2018) draft pick Royce Freeman.

Freeman signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad on December 11.

He has yet to see game action with his new team. But Freeman is still happy to hear about and see the strong season his old one is having.

“I’ve seen many of people man playing in this league – coaches and players alike,” Freeman told Clocker Sports on December 18. “Sometimes you can’t keep track, you bouncing around so much. But when I always see a familiar face, man, it’s great. Because I know how much the game means to a lot of the guys. And to see them keep going, definitely gives me more energy, more juice.”

Several of Freeman’s former teammates are still Broncos like Courtland Sutton and Garett Bolles.

The Broncos never won more than seven games during Freeman’s tenure, which also crossed over with former head coach Vic Fangio and running back Melvin Gordon. Gordon led the team in rushing during the Freeman’s final season in Denver.

The Broncos are 9-5 entering Week 16 in 2024, and they have a 92% chance of making the postseason as of December 18, per NFL.com’s playoff picture.

Royce Freeman’s Career Changed After Ankle Injury

GettyFormer Denver Broncos running backs Phillip Lindsay #30 and Royce Freeman #28 look on against Los Angeles Rams.

Freeman started the first eight games of his rookie campaign, playing for Broncos defensive coordinator who was the head coach at the time. But he suffered an ankle injury and lost his starting spot to Phillip Lindsay, who now hosts “The Drive” on 104.3 The Fan in Denver.

Freeman did not start again until the final game of the season. The 6-foot, 238-pound “bigger back” rushed for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns on 71 carries in his first eight games.

He has rushed for 1,792 yards and 10 scores on 471 career carries in five seasons since then.

However, Freeman has started just one of the 65 games he has appeared in since losing his starting spot in Denver and being cut to free up roster spots in 2021.

Freeman has bounced around the league since then. He has at least spent time in the preseason with the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and the Los Angeles Rams.

Freeman rushed for 319 yards on 77 carries with LA in 2023.

Royce Freeman Cites Broncos Tenure When Touting Versatility

GettyFormer Denver Broncos Running back Royce Freeman #28 is congratulated by Garett Bolles #72 and other teammates after a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders.

The Bears are 4-10 and riding an eight-game losing streak. They also have two established backs in starter D’Andre Swift and top backup Roschon Johnson. The Bears also have trusted emergency options in special teams maven Travis Homer and retread Darrynton Evans.

Freeman said he is just ready to help in any way possible.

Asked about the biggest difference between the player he was as a rookie and the one he is today, Freeman referenced his time with the Broncos and the versatility it taught him.

“Rookie Royce Freeman [was] very, very green, obviously, coming into the league and everything,” he said. “Diving more, I guess, into honing my skills, I’d say. Definitely adding more to my repertoire. So as much as I’ve played along the years, I’ve added many things, like I said, going from starting back to a third down presence of a back and special teams; definitely in Denver.”

“Adding those to my game definitely, I feel like, helped and kept me along in the league this far,” Freeman said.

He touted that versatility when asked what he could bring to the Bears’ backfield if given the opportunity. He was less than one week into the playbook before their Week 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Perhaps Freeman can get an opportunity over the next three weeks to show what he can do.

The Denver Broncos have a running back problem. While it’s not a problem that’s new to 2024, it’s just become more pronounced as the Broncos have shocked the NFL this season by going from a team projected to win less than 6 games in the preseason to being on the verge of making the AFC Playoffs for the first time since 2015.

While the Broncos and head coach Sean Payton have taken a patchwork approach to running back — and relied heavily on the young legs of rookie quarterback Bo Nix — it’s not something that’s probably sustainable moving forward.

That’s why the Broncos should make a big move in the offseason and try to sign free agent running back Najee Harris away from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harris has been one of the most consistent running backs in the NFL over the last 4 seasons and is on pace for his fourth consecutive season with at least 1,000 rushing yards with 891 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns through 14 games — Harris also has 30 receptions for 256 yards.

Dominant Running Back in NFL’s Toughest Division

Harris was the No. 1 overall recruit in the country for the Class of 2017 at Antioch (California) High School and ended up part of several stacked backfields at the University of Alabama, where he played alongside fellow future NFL stars Josh Jacobs and Brian Robinson Jr.

Still, Harris’ talent separated him from the pack. In 4 seasons, he won 2 College Football Playoff national championships, was a 2-time All-SEC selection and capped his career with back-to-back seasons over 1,200 rushing yards in 2019 and 2020. That included 1,891 yards from scrimmage and 30 total touchdowns in 2020 as he was named a unanimous All-American and won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back.

The Steelers drafted Harris in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft and signed him to a 4-year, $13 million contract. In May 2024, the Steelers declined the fifth year option that would have paid Harris $6.79 million in 2025 — what could now only be described as a considerable financial discount.

Projecting What Harris Might Cost the Broncos

According to Spotrac, Harris’ projected market value in free agency equates to a 3-year, $27.9 million contract that would make him one of the Top 10 highest paid running backs in the NFL.

The Broncos would be smart to offer Harris a deal somewhere in that neighborhood. Hypothetically, a starting point could be a 3-year, $24 million contract.

No Broncos player has rushed for over 1,000 yards in a single season since Phillip Lindsay in 2019 and they’ve come up woefully short again in 2024, with Javonte Williams leading the team with 461 yards and 4 touchdowns while averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. No Broncos player has passed 100 rushing yards in a single season in 2024.

It’s been a long time since the Broncos could say they had an elite running back on the roster. They haven’t had an NFL All-Pro at running back since Pro Football Hall of Famer and 2-time Super Bowl champion Terrell Davis was an All-Pro for 3 consecutive seasons from 1996 to 1998. The Broncos haven’t had a Pro Bowl running back for a decade since Lindsay made it in 2018.

A lot has changed for the Denver Broncos on and off the field since former starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was under center in 2021. Most notably, head coach Sean Payton has come along and drafted Bridgewater’s latest successor, Bo Nix.

Bridgewater, a notable figure in Broncos franchise history as the first black quarterback to open the regular season as the starter, retired following at the end of the 2023 season.

After winning a state title at his high school alma mater, Bridgewater is coming out of retirement.

“We’ll see how these next week and a half, two weeks play out. Might be signing with a team or something and then returning back to coach high school football in February, so we’ll see,” Bridgewater told Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport on “The Insiders” on December 17, leaving the hosts in a visible state of shock.

“That’s the plan, man. My team knows that’s the plan. We wanted to win the state championship and then go back to the league. See what happens and then come back February in the offseason. Continue to coach high school football. So we’ll see how it plays out.”

“Right now I’m enjoying this state championship, man, and we’ll see how it all plays out.”

Teddy Bridgewater Called His Shot

Teddy Bridgewater, Denver Broncos

GettyFormer Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater looks on before a game against the New York Giants.

“So many QB jobs available for me after we make this state title run,” Bridgewater posted on X in November. “I can’t wait to return back to the NFL.”

Bridgewater spent nine active seasons in the NFL, excluding the year off he had to take rehabbing from a devastating knee injury suffered during his third season. He had been a Pro Bowler the season before.

He played seven seasons after suffering and returning from the injury.

Bridgewater made double-digit starts twice in that span, including during his lone campaign in Denver during which he led the Broncos to a 7-7 record.

He completed 66.9% of his passes for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions that season. The 32-year-old QB has also played for the Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins so far in his career.

Payton coached Bridgewater in 2018 and 2019 while the two were with the New Orleans Saints.

“Those kids have no idea how lucky they are,” Payton said, per Peter King for Football Morning In America in February in reaction to Bridgwater’s retirement to pursue coaching. “One of my favorite players ever. And one of the best leaders I’ve been around. He’s like Ferris Bueller—everyone just followed him. He’ll do a phenomenal job.”

Winning a championship in his first season with no coaching experience is indeed outstanding.

“Louisville Football legend Teddy Bridgewater has led Miami Northwestern (FL) to the 3A state title in his first year as head coach, after defeating Eau Gallie 40-0!” 35KYSports posted on X on December 7.

What comes next for Bridgewater will be a source of intrigue with several teams potentially needing experienced quarterbacks on their roster for 2025.

Broncos Could Bring Back Teddy Bridgewater as QB2 in 2025

Teddy Bridgewater, Denver Broncos

GettyFormer Denver Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater #5 walks to the sideline before a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Broncos and Bridgewater could be of service to each other. Denver is set with Nix entrenched as QB1.

However, backups Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are pending free agents.

Bridgewater could step in behind Nix and his previous experience in Payton’s offense could make for a smooth transition back to the game. The Broncos could still draft a developmental QB late too. For Bridgewater, he would be stepping into a low-expectation situation.

He would be expected to do nothing more than help Nix as needed and maybe run a couple of handoffs or kneel-downs to salt a game or two away as a backup; ideal given his injury history.

The Denver Broncos have had 2 games to see what life is like without second year cornerback Riley Moss — and it’s not great.

Moss has had 3 weeks to heal the knee he injured in a Week 12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders and practiced for the first time since the injury on Tuesday before a Week 16 Thursday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Riley Moss took a step closer to his return on Tuesday, seeing limited practice work as the Denver Broncos held a walk-through session,” wrote 104.3 The Fan’s Andrew Mason on December 17. “It marked the first practice-field work for Moss since he suffered an MCL injury in the second quarter of the Broncos’ Nov. 24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Moss stretched with his teammates last week, but was officially listed throughout the week with a ‘did not practice’ designation, as he spent the actual practice session focused on rehab work.”

Without Moss, the Broncos have seen a rotation of backup cornerbacks struggled playing across from NFL All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain. That included a Week 13 game in which Cleveland Browns wide receiver (and former Bronco) Jerry Jeudy torched the secondary to the tune of 9 receptions for 235 yards and 1 touchdown — an NFL single-game record for a player against his old team.

Moss started all 12 games for the Broncos before his injury, with 71 tackles, 1 interception and 1 tackle for loss.

Moss Has Been Revelation for Broncos

Sports Illustrated’s Chad Evans called Moss “one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks” just 5 games into the regular season and after the Broncos defeated the Raiders in Week 5 — a game in which Moss recorded his first career interception.

Moss Became Odd Part of NFL History in 2024

When Moss beat out Damarri Mathis for the starting cornerback spot opposite Surtain for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, he became an odd part of NFL history as the first white cornerback to start a game in 22 years — since Jason Sehorn for the New York Giants in 2002.

Moss’ ascension wasn’t a surprise. He was a 2-time All-Big Ten pick at the University of Iowa and the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 2021.

The Broncos selected Moss in the third round (No. 83 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft and as a rookie in 2023, he played primarily on special teams.

“An instinctive cornerback with good size and play strength, Moss will need to prove he has the speed and durability needed for the next level,” NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in 2023. ” … Ballhawking instincts and soft hands are a big part of his game, as is his physicality at the catch point and as a tackler.”

The Denver Broncos have a 91% chance of making the playoffs entering Week 16, per NFL.com. Denver also has the seventh-toughest remaining schedule, per Tankathon. But Bo Nix has more on his mind.

Nix overcame three interceptions in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts, throwing 3 touchdowns in a 31-13 victory.

One more victory will secure a playoff berth, the Broncos’ first since 2015.

Again, though, Nix has far grander plans in mind amid the Broncos’ four-game win streak and he is not shying away from it. Asked about how he views needing to win one of the next three games for the playoffs, Nix took it a step further.

“We got three games to win three and go into the playoffs and win a Super Bowl,” Nix told reporters on December 17.

Nix’s comments went over well with Broncos Country.

“The Broncos have three games to win one game,” Mile High Sports’ Andrew Mason posted on X on December 17. “Bo Nix sees it differently”

“god bless Bo Nix,” one fan posted on X in reaction to Nix’s comments.

Nix finished the win over Indy having completed 60.6% of his passes for 130 yards with another 23 yards coming on the ground. The Broncos have not won the Super Bowl since Peyton Manning took them following the 2015 regular season.

Sean Payton Praises Bo Nix For Weathering Storm vs Colts

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

Nix’s ability to navigate the turbulence of the game garnered praise from teammates like Courtland Sutton, who lambasted those criticizing Nix for his rough first half, and Broncos head coach Sean Payton.

Payton said postgame that he was upset with himself for some of the positions he put Nix in with his play calls in the win.

He also expressed encouragement about Nix’s unwavering approach.

“This is a tough League sometimes,” Payton told reporters on December 16. “When something like that happens, with that adversity early on, I get frustrated at myself. Am I getting them the right looks, the right plays? But then later in that game when we needed it, he didn’t flinch. There’s a maturity and a moxy about him, which I love. And I think it’s contagious to the team.

“When you have that at the quarterback position, your team knows you’re in every game. And when you don’t have it, … that’s pretty difficult. Because deep down in their belly they know that that’s not the case.

“That’s something … you notice with him this year, especially, and with this team.”

Nix is encouraged by how his Broncos career has started. But, just like with his outlook on the Broncos’ prospects, he sees the bigger picture ahead.

“There’s a level of anticipation that you got to be a little bit careful of and be weary of and then also not be late. So there’s a good happy medium there. But it’s the things that I see on film, it’s the things that I’ve noticed and picked up that it’s a part of the NFL that [I’m] gonna continue to get used to,” Nix said.

“That’s the exciting part of it, is I got a long long road ahead of me.”

Bo Nix, Broncos Have Tough Road Ahead of Them

The Broncos indeed face a daunting slate of opponents the rest of the way. First up is a trip to face the Los Angeles Chargers, who beat the Broncos in Week 6 but are also 1-3 in their last four games.

They present a challenge on paper with quarterback Justin Herbert and the NFL’s No. 1-ranked scoring defense. However, LA has scored 17 points in three straight games.

Their vaunted defense surrendered 40 points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15.

After that, the Broncos will visit the Bengals in Cincinnati in Week 17. The Bengals’ defense is on the opposite end of the spectrum from LA, ranking 31st in points allowed. But the Bengals’ offense is potent with Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase anchoring the No. 1 passing attack.

Nix and the Broncos host the reining-champion Kansas City Chiefs, who they would have to beat to even reach the Super Bowl this season, in Week 18.

They could see them in the playoffs as soon as the Divisional Round.

Fortunately for the Broncos, the Chiefs could be resting Patrick Mahomes in that game.

Mahomes suffered an ankle injury in Week 15. He practiced in full during the first session of Week 16. The Chiefs have already won the AFC West crown. But the Buffalo Bills are still vying for the No. 1 seed and can win it with an identical record, owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Denver Broncos have never needed their group of running backs more than they have over the last month.

And in that moment of truth, with a playoff spot on the line. the running backs have essentially disappeared. Irregardless, the Broncos have won 4 consecutive games and are now 9-5 headed into a Week 16 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The failings of the run game were never more pronounced than in a 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15 in which rookie quarterback Bo Nix was Denver’s leading rusher with 23 yards.

That’s one big reason why the Broncos need to cut ties with leading rusher Javonte Williams, who is in the final season of the 4-year, $8.86 million rookie contract he signed in 2021.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine thinks the Broncos will turn to the NFL draft in 2025 in hopes of finally finding the answer to their rushing problem by selecting University of Iowa star Kaleb Johnson.

“The Broncos are going to have to make a decision with Javonte Williams going into next season,” Ballentine wrote. “He’s in the final season of his rookie contract and he just hasn’t looked like the player he was as a rookie before injuries. The best answer might just be drafting a new back and starting over at the position.”

Williams leads the Broncos with 461 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns through 14 games but is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and 32.9 yards per game.

Broncos Might Not Be Able to Afford Williams

Cutting ties with Williams might not just be the smart thing to do in terms of Xs and Os, but also the smartest move for the Broncos in financial terms.

Despite his down year in 2024, Williams’ retains a market value in the range of a 3-year, $20.6 million contract, according to Spotrac. It’s not hard to see that the success of the Philadelphia Eagles signing free agent running back Saquon Barkley in 2024 will translate to more money for the incoming group of free agents in 2025.

The Broncos won’t be willing to pay for a player who hasn’t produced at an elite level — especially not with $33.4 million in dead cap money in 2025.

You know who doesn’t cost a lot of money? Rookies. Especially if you can get them in the mid to later rounds.

Broncos Put Too Much on Nix’s Shoulders in Run Game

Any move the Broncos might make in the future will be centered around Nix, who has led the team to its first winning record since 2016 and on the verge of its first playoff appearance since 2015.

The Broncos have also relied on Nix to run the ball in 2024 — probably too much. He is third on the team with 337 rushing yards, tied for the team lead with 4 rushing touchdowns and averages 4.4 yards per carry. No player for the Broncos has rushed for over 100 yards in a game in 2024.

Johnson, 6-foot and 225 pounds, could be the remedy.

He’s currently the No. 3 running back on ESPN’s Big Board Rankings from Mel Kiper Jr. and was named a unanimous All-American and Big Ten Running Back of the Year in 2024 after rushing for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns while averaging a whopping 6.4 yards per carry.

The Denver Broncos trailed the Indianapolis Colts 13-7 in the third quarter of their eventual 31-13 win.

Indianapolis appeared to take a 19-7 lead on a Jonathan Taylor run. But upon further review, Taylor had dropped the ball before crossing the goal line. The score was not only overturned but ruled a fumble and touchback, giving the Broncos the ball at their own 20-yard line.

“That was a crazy play with Jonathan Taylor,” Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper said during his postgame media availability on December 15. “Shoutout to him.”

“At the end of the day, it’s a game of inches,” P.J. Locke said in the locker room. “I didn’t think it would happen like that, that being kind of a turning point in the game.

“If he scores that touchdown like he did, and that doesn’t happen, we playing a totally different game. VJ [defensive coordinator Vance Joseph] is calling the defense calling the defensive plays different, [head coach Sean Payton] is calling offensive plays different, they’re running their offense a little bit different. So, yeah, that would’ve been game-changing.”

Broncos defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers praised a higher power.

Broncos Players Thank God for Jonathan Taylor’s Fumble

“God is good,” Franklin-Myers said, per 9News’ Mike Klis on December 15. “Mistake on his part. Good running back, made a good play, but a mistake. We all make them but, shoot, that one cost momentum and could have cost them the game.”

Payton chose not to look a gift horse in the mouth after the game. But he still noted the significance of the play.

“That was significant. I don’t get it, but I’m not going to try to. Yeah, I don’t know what that was going to be. Yeah, it was a significant play that you go from breaking a long run for a touchdown for your team to us having the ball. So, yeah, there was a number of [turning-point] plays. But that was one of them,” Payton told reporters on December 15.

“Certainly [Nik] Bonitto’s play, that runner dropping the ball on the goal line – still, that was something. You go from scoring 7 [points] to the other team – like a turnover. And then, look, it got away from them there.”

Broncos tight end Adam Trautman shared his thoughts on how Payton would react.

Bonitto, who logged a pick-6 for the second straight week, echoed Franklin-Myers’ sentiments.

“I was happy, he bailed us out with that one,” Bonitto said, per Klis. “Obviously we messed up with our run defense and he was able to get there but thank God he did what he did.”

Locke said he was in disbelief, noting he had only seen it happen on social media, per The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider. Kosmider also noted Franklin-Myers said everyone makes mistakes, but that one “cost” the Colts, shifting the “momentum” and making the game non-competitive.

Jonathan Taylor Explains Costly Fumble

Jonathan Taylor, Denver Broncos

GettyJonathan Taylor #28 of the Indianapolis Colts carries the ball against the Denver Broncos.

“I can’t recall covering that. It wouldn’t be a teaching point,” Payton said. “I think that’ll be difficult for the coaches and every one of his teammates. It’ll just be difficult, and it’s – I don’t get it. And so, yeah, I’ll leave it at that.”

Taylor gave his explanation after the Broncos win, saying he was unaware he had dropped the ball prematurely until seeing the play was under review.

“That can’t happen,” Taylor told reporters on December 15. “You’re never conscious of where you’re dropping the ball, that’s why you don’t do it.

“It just can’t happen. No matter the game, no matter the scenario. You could be up by 50 [points], down by 50, playoff game versus game of the season, that should never happen.”

His message to his teammates was a sincere apology and a vow not to repeat the blunder.

“I just told them, ‘I apologize.’ And I just know that that’ll never happen again,” Taylor said. “That never happened to me before and you know it’ll never happen again.”

“It hurts, especially when … you’re getting kind of into a flow during the game, and then you start shooting yourself in the foot. That hurts the most,” Taylor said. “Sometimes someone gives you their best and your best just wasn’t good enough. But when you hurt yourself like that, that one hurts.”

]]>
There was a time, in the not so distant past, when the general consensus among NFL pundits was that the sixth quarterback taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft was the worst of the bunch.

It was around the same time the Denver Broncos and quarterback Bo Nix — that sixth quarterback taken at No. 12 overall — were projected by Vegas oddsmakers at just 5.5 wins for the regular season and any Bronco fan retaining hope a decade-long playoff drought would end in 2024 seemed like openly inviting misery into their lives.

What a difference 4 months makes. The Broncos are now 9-5 and have a 91 percent chance of making the AFC Playoffs, according to NFL.com, and have already clinched a winning record for the first time since 2016 — and with Nix leading the way.

It’s that kind of success for Nix that invites the privilege of criticism after Nix played poorly in a 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15, going 20-of-33 passing for 130 yards, 3 touchdowns and a career high 3 interceptions.

“Bo Nix has shown remarkable maturity throughout the season, but he is making the typical rookie mistake of messing up early,” ESPN’s Jeff Legwold wrote on December 15. “That happened again Sunday, as he threw an interception in the first quarter and two more in the second half.”

Nix and the Broncos’ offense don’t have to wait long for a chance to fix those mistakes as they return to action in Week 16 in a Thursday Night Football road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Worst Passing Game For Broncos, Nix Since Week 4

While Nix has been excellent for the Broncos — he’s even made a push for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year — his play in Week 15 was alarming for how close the Broncos are to the end of the season.

His struggles against the Colts represented Nix’s worst passing game since Week 4, when he went 12-of-25 passing for 60 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions in a 10-9 win over the New York Jets. It was the lowest amount of passing yards for an NFL quarterback in a win since Eli Manning (59 yards) in 2007.

“I don’t know how else to put it,” The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz said on “The Ringer NFL Show Podcast” on December 16. “I thought this was a setback for Bo Nix. He had a couple of ugly throws, a couple of ugly interceptions. The first one, I didn’t know what he was looking at. It was very Will Levis-coded.”

How the Broncos Can Clinch Playoff Spot

The Broncos have one very simple scenario in which they clinch a playoff spot against the Chargers: Win and they’re in.

If the Broncos can’t do that, there’s still a way they can clinch this week if all 3 of the AFC teams with a 6-8 record lose; the Colts, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins.

“This scenario requires a little more heavy lifting from the rest of the AFC,” Predominantly Orange’s Jack Ramsey wrote on December 16. “Regardless of their outcome on Thursday night, the Broncos can clinch a playoff spot if all three of the AFC’s 6-8 teams lose this week. All three teams play at home, and there is reason to believe that all three will be favored in their matchup. The Bengals host the Browns, who are once again in quarterback limbo after the benching of Jameis Winston.”

The Denver Broncos got a decisive win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15, but it did not come without a cost. All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II exited the game during the fourth quarter and did not return.

Surtain, a two-time Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro in 2022, missing time would be a significant blow for the Broncos.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton did not provide many details, but there is still some good news.

“#Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain, who exited early with an injury, is believed to be dealing with a minor ankle sprain, the source said,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported in a post on X on December 16.

“He was walking without a limp through the locker room after the game and seemed fine,” 9News’ Mike Klis wrote on December 15.

“Oh yeah, I’m good,” Surtain said, per Klis.

Surtain is fortunate to avoid a more serious outcome like a high ankle sprain which can be a multi-week injury or worse.

Surtain, who signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension in September, has allowed a career-worst 60.5% completion percentage, per Pro Football Reference. But opposing quarterbacks also have a 49.5 rating when targeting Surtain, the best mark of his career.

Sean Payton Comments on Pat Surtain II’s Injury in Broncos Win

Pat Surtain II, Denver Broncos

GettyPat Surtain II #2 of the Denver Broncos before a game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Payton discussed the decision to hold Surtain out. The Broncos already had the game in hand but that was not necessarily part of the thought process. The head coach also did not provide any further details.

“Anything we do relative to a player’s injury is always – if the medical staff feels like he can go back in, and he’s healthy enough, there’s never any, ‘Well we don’t need him now.’ It’s just strictly, ‘Is he healthy enough to play?’” Payton told reporters on December 15. “If he’s not, he won’t. And if he is, he will play. That’s, I think, the only way you can approach things like that.”

Payton’s comments are more ominous than Surtain’s, especially with the Broncos already short-handed and on a short week.

They face the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football in Week 16.

The timing of Surtain’s injury is exacerbated by the absence of fellow starting corner Riley Moss, who missed Weeks 13 and 15 with a knee issue he sustained in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Justin Herbert, Chargers Could Test Broncos CB Depth

Justin Herbert, Denver Broncos

GettyJustin Herbert #10 of the Los Angeles Chargers leaves the field after their 23-16 win against the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos tried to replace Moss with veteran Levi Wallace in Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns but benched him before the game ended.

Rookie fifth-round pick Kris Abrams-Draine got the starting nod in Week 16.

The Broncos could turn to third-year man Damarri Mathis. He started 11 of 16 games as a rookie and six of 17 games during his second season in 2023. They also called up 2023 undrafted free agent Reese Taylor in Week 15.

Payton touted the team’s depth before the win over the Colts. But a short week could make for a challenging turnaround for Surtain and the Broncos.

The Chargers have lost three of their last four games entering Week 16.

However, they notched a 23-16 win over the Broncos in Week 6. That was before Denver’s offense – and more importantly, rookie QB Bo Nix – hit its stride. Still, the Broncos will have to affect Justin Herbert to take pressure off their secondary.

The Denver Broncos overcame 3 interceptions from rookie quarterback Bo Nix to notch a 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Nix also threw 3 touchdown passes, but he was still the target of criticism from some fans in attendance. That did not sit well with one of his biggest supporters on the team, wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

Sutton did not hold back.

“Courtland Sutton said hearing fans talk poorly about Bo Nix after a couple of bad series is “disheartening” and ‘b.s.’” DNVR Broncos’ Zac Stevens posted on X on December 15.

“Added the team has full confidence in Bo.”

Fans of other teams certainly took Nix to task on social media over his early-game struggles in the eventual win.

“Bo Nix and Anthony Richardson are having the most disgusting QB battle known to man,” one fan posted on X. “Both over 20 attempts both under 100 yards passing.

“Both with turnovers

“Bo Nix throws 3 awful picks and throws for 130 yards but his team still wins by 3 scores [sad face emoji],” posted another fan.

“It’s a must-win game for the Broncos and Bo Nix did not show up to play,” The Sports Place’s Arye Pulli posted. “He has three interceptions already.”

Sutton finished the game with a team-leading 32 receiving yards on three receptions. The game snapped his streak of 70-plus-yard performances at six games dating back to Week 8.

Bo Nix Finds ‘Maturity’ in Adversity of 3 INT Day in Broncos Win

Courtland Sutton, Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

GettyCourtland Sutton #14 of the Denver Broncos celebrates after scoring a touchdown with teammate Bo Nix #10 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Nix described what he goes through in a situation like he had versus the Colts. The Broncos QB admitted it is “challenging.”

“It gets to where you feel like, ‘Man, every time I throw it, is it going to be picked?’ And you start having those mental thoughts. But it’s challenging. It’s probably the toughest part of our position because you know what you’re capable of, you know that you know the read, you know how to – you know your footwork, how to go through it. And then you just got to keep from being gunshy and keep from being – don’t let one turn into another you know false vision and see things that that aren’t actually there,” Nix told reporters on December 15.

“I felt like I saw the game well today, but that didn’t keep me from … turning the ball over. So what is it? I got to get back to the sideline and regroup, and I feel like the guys over there do a great job of keeping me encouraged and you know reminded me that, ‘It’s a long game. Go out there and do what you do.’

“I’m not going to lie, it’s tough,” Nix said. “You start getting a little bit in your head and you start questioning, ‘Am I actually seeing it? What was that?’ Anso it’s tough. But we’re all – I feel like everybody goes through it, so. The ones that can get out of it and finish the game and win and not let it dictate the outcome of the game, that’s usually when you find some maturity and you find some growth and that I just got to keep continue to do that.

“Unfortunately, it’s not the first time I’ve thrown three in a game … Hopefully, it’s the last. But, probably [not]. Football will tell you it’s not going to be if you play it long enough. So just got to move on to the next play and get the next completion.”

2-Time Super Bowl Champion QB Praises Bo Nix

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

GettyBo Nix #10 of the Denver Broncos celebrates with fans after their 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

NBC analyst Jason Garrett commended Nix for overcoming his poor start and leading the Broncos to victory.

“I want to give a shoutout to that rookie quarterback. Interceptions early, but again, a rookie who doesn’t go away when it gets hard. He hangs in there and ends up throwing three touchdowns,” Garrett said about Nix during the Sunday Night Football pregame show, per 9News’ Mike Klis on December 15.

“He was much better in the second half and later in the ball game. He’s handled everything about being a starting quarterback in the NFL really well, and again it goes back to that mental toughness. He showed it today.”

Garrett was a two-time Super Bowl-winning QB during his playing career. He played for Broncos head coach Sean Payton when the latter was the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys in 2000.

Garrett also stepped into Payton’s vacated offensive coordinator role in 2007. That was one year after the latter took over as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

The time has come that when we talk about Denver Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, to put it in the words of legendary rapper/producer Birdman, we should “put some respect” on Bonitto’s name.

It’s been that kind of year for the former second round pick who has seemingly played his way into a new tax bracket in his third season.

That includes scoring defensive touchdowns in back-to-back games with the latest being an intercepted lateral pass that went into the books as a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown in a 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15. Bonitto return an interception 71 yards for a touchdown in a 41-32 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 13, with the Broncos getting their bye in Week 14.

Through 14 games, Bonitto has 41 tackles and is second in the NFL with 11.5 sacks.

The Broncos are now 9-5 and clinched their first winning record since 2016 with the win over the Colts and have a 91 percent chance to make the AFC playoffs, according to NFL.com.

“I think it’s time we start talking about Nik Bonitto as a true Defensive Player of the Year candidate,” Bleav in Broncos’ Patrick Chiotti said on December 15. “… They have managed to develop him into a very solid defensive player and he has taken that jump from Year 2 into Year 3 and has now become an elite defensive player.”

Bonitto’s Path to Broncos Includes Interesting Twist

When the Broncos traded 4-time NFL All-Pro outside linebacker and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams in November 2021, they received a 2022 second round pick and 2022 third round pick in return.

The Broncos eventually traded away the third round pick but used the second round pick to take Bonitto at No. 64 overall out of Oklahoma.

“Undersized edge defender who plays in a slant-based scheme that makes evaluating his three-down value more difficult,” NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote about Bonitto in 2022. “Evaluating the pass-rush talent, on the other hand, is quite easy. He’s a wildly athletic rusher who blends get-off, stride length and flexibility into one alarming package for tackles trying to slow him down. Rush counters come instinctively and his ability to seamlessly transition his attack from outside to inside makes him a projectable rusher against athletic tackles as a pro.”

Tracking Bonitto’s Ascension to NFL Elite

One thing Bonitto has made sure of after this season is that he will likely end up among the NFL’s highest paid defensive players — the average salary of the Top 10 highest paid edge rushers in the NFL in terms of total contract value was at $128.5 million in 2024, according to Over the Cap.

That’s a long way from the 4-year, $5.8 million rookie contract Bonitto signed in May 2022, which he still has 1 year left on in 2025, when he’s due to make approximately $1.5 million. It’s hard to see the Broncos wanting to roll the dice on Bonitto becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2026, at just 27 years old, so he could be in line for a massive pay hike after this season.

Some saw this coming. Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph told ESPN’s Jeff Legwold before the season that he thought the Broncos might have a star pass rusher in Bonitto, who Joseph called “special” after he had a career-high 8.0 sacks in 2023.

The Denver Broncos got a big win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 13, though it came amid historic performances from opposing quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

Heading into another contest with significant playoff implications against the Indianapolis Colts, the Broncos have benched one of the key contributors to their win over the Browns.

The Broncos benched Levi Wallace, taking it one step further.

“Levi Wallace is INACTIVE,” 9News’ Mike Klis wrote on December 15. “So it is Kris Abrams-Draine/Damarri Mathis in [Riley] Moss’ CB spot today.

“After making his NFL debut in Week 13, rookie cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine is active for the second consecutive game,” DenverBroncos.com’s Aric DiLalla wrote on December 15. “Abrams-Draine played 12 defensive snaps against the Browns and saw time at cornerback late in the fourth quarter as the game hung in the balance.

“Veteran cornerback Levi Wallace, meanwhile, is inactive for Sunday’s game against the Colts. Wallace played 74 snaps against the Browns in place of an injured Riley Moss.”

Moss injured his MCL in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders and has not practiced since.

“First-year cornerback Reese Taylor is also active, and he could be posed to make his regular-season debut,” DiLalla wrote. “Moss was the lone inactive player due to injury, as he was ruled out on Friday after being held out of all three of Denver’s Week 15 practices.”

Broncos head coach Sean Payton did not tip his hand about Wallace’s future. But he did tout the team’s depth without.

Abrams-Draine was a fifth-round pick this year. Taylor was an undrafted free agent in 2023.

Levi Wallace Showed Remorse Over Performance in Broncos Win vs Browns

Pro Football Focus charged Wallace with allowing six receptions for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 targets versus the Browns.

Jeudy posted the most receiving yards by a player against his former team in NFL history.

“I take it all on myself,’’ Wallace told The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson in an interview published on December 12. “I don’t put the blame anywhere else. I just want to say myself personally I just didn’t make the plays. … I’ve had really good games and what I just had that was probably the worst game I played in the league. Absolutely.

“Maybe my pride (was hurt). I’ve covered Jeudy plenty of times and Jeudy is a good player. He’s always been. I have been, too. Him and me were talking a little bit out there (after the game), and some stuff, that just happened. But such is life.”

Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joesph, who, like Wallace, was a target of fans’ ire during the game, said the showing fell on him first and never on a player.

Wallace credited the Browns for their approach to an aggressive Broncos defense.

“You got to give them credit,’’ Wallace told Tomasson. “They knew that we lead the league in sacks so their main objective was to protect Jameis, and so there was a lot of max protection, which just kind of left us out there by ourselves (in the secondary).”

Wallace, who signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Broncos during the 2024 offseason and earned $11.8 million in his career, per Over The Cap, may be done in Denver.

Fans React to Levi Wallace Benching

Some Colts fans were certainly eager for a chance to take advantage of Wallace in coverage this week. However, nickelback Ja’Quan McMillian was also an appealing matchup in their eyes.

Understandably, then, some Broncos fans celebrated Wallace’s benching.

“Target TEs or RBs?” Stampede Blue’s Jay Robbins posted on X on December 15. “Or feed [Josh] Downs who is 4th in the NFL vs Man coverage & is going against the most targeted Slot CB in the NFL (McMillian) by 10

“Or try for a big play with Alec [Pierce] or AD [Adonai Mitchell] against Levi Wallace who is coming off of a terrible coverage game vs deeper depth targets.”

“Levi Wallace benched,” one fan posted in reaction. “Broncos playoff spot.”

Wallace was eager for a chance to redeem himself in Week 15, but that did not come. And Week 13 was not his first poor outing this season. Wallace has allowed a 60% completion rate or better in eight of 13 games, per PFF.

Opposing QBs have completed 100% of their passes thrown in Wallace’s direction in five games. Those passers were 9-for-9 in those outings when targeting Wallace.

The Denver Broncos could be a prime landing spot for another weapon for Bo Nix in free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Finding useful contributors can be challenging as the season hits the final stretch. Relationships are key in the NFL and having a previous connection with players on a roster or a coaching staff could mean the difference between finding work and being a spectator.

The former New York Giants star, Beckham, certainly hopes it is the former.

NFL insider Josina Anderson believes the Broncos could provide that opportunity, and that Beckham’s “prev rapport” with Broncos head coach Sean Payton could play a part.

“Teams I currently see as my fits for OBJ on the basis of HC, QB, current contention & future need w/ potential attrition at the position (no particular order),” Anderson posted on X on December 14. “1) Seahawks 2) Commanders 3) Texans 4) Broncos (prev rapport with Sean) 5) Rams (prev rapport with [Sean] McVay) 6) *Bills.”

Beckham, 32, has never played for Payton. But Payton was head coach of the New Orleans Saints while Beckham – a Louisiana native – attended LSU.

Per Over The Cap, Beckham has already earned $99.1 million in his career. He signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Miami Dolphins in free agency during the 2024 season. But injuries limited his availability to start the season.

He saw fewer targets as the season wore on once he was healthy.

Beckham and the Dolphins “mutually” parted ways on December 13, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

“Beckham is hoping for more opportunities elsewhere and the team is granting his release. He’ll be on waivers until Monday,” Pelissero reported on X on December 13. “Odell Beckham Jr.’s release is expected to be official today. If he clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any team.”

The Dolphins announced the move a short while after Pelissero broke the news.

Odell Beckham Not Same ‘Iconic’ Play-Maker

Odell Beckham Jr., Denver Broncos

GettyOdell Beckham #13 of the New York Giants scores a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys.

Beckham has nine receptions for 55 yards in nine games in 2024. He had a 35-565-3 line with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, making six starts in his 14 appearances.

Beckham famously rose to prominence as a rookie, snagging a pass one-handed for a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys. He had 10 grabs for 146 yards and hit paydirt twice that day. He celebrated the anniversary of that play with a post on X.

“10 year annnni, sheeeeesh! i appreciate every one of you! its beeeeen a journey. the one n not the twoooooooo! luvvvv,” Beckham posted in November.

“jobs not finished” – @kobebryant”

ESPN called the play “iconic.” The NFL called it the “catch of the year” and “arguably of all time.” However, Beckham is not that player anymore and he has not been for several years through various injuries and teams.

The Giants traded Beckham to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He spent two full seasons there, even tallying over 1,000 receiving yards in his first season.

Cleveland waived Beckham in November 2021 following an agreement to part ways.

He signed with the Rams days later and went on to help them reach the Super Bowl that season. But Beckham tore his ACL during the game and missed the entire 2022 season, first recovering from the injury and then seeking another opportunity.

Beckham signed with the Ravens for one year at $15 million in 2023, but he seems unlikely to land another deal of that magnitude given the stage of his career and the season.

Beckham also goes against the Broncos’ current youth movement.

Odell Beckham Not a Fit for Broncos Despite Pedigree

Odell Beckham Jr., Denver Broncos

GettyFormer Miami Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. looks on before a match between Inter Miami and Atlanta United.

Beckham was solid for the Rams leading up to his injury in the Super Bowl. But his age and injury history could make him an unappealing target for the Broncos. And despite his potential “rapport” with Payton, he has not played in the Broncos’ offense.

Learning the scheme could take weeks, by which time the Broncos’ established receivers will be even more so.

Denver decided to skew younger, releasing veteran Josh Reynolds in November.

Reynolds did miss time with injuries, and he was the victim of a shooting in Colorado during Week 7. However, the play of youngsters Devaughn Vele, Marvin Mims, and Troy Franklin was a bigger impetus for the decision.

There does not appear to be a spot for Beckham on the Broncos roster, though it is possible.
