Davis had a sack and two total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, in Sunday's win over Atlanta. Davis played ten snaps on defense as he got some time as a reserve linebacker. The 2021 first-round pick of Washington could be used in clear passing situations to help the pass rush after joining the Vikings Nov. 26 from Green Bay's practice squad after being released by Washington early in the season.
The Vikings signed Davis off the Packers' practice squad Tuesday. After being cut by the Commanders on Oct. 22, Davis managed to catch on with the Packers' practice squad Oct. 29, though he hasn't been elevated to Green Bay's active roster. Adding Davis to the 53-man roster gives the Vikings much-needed depth at inside linebacker after Ivan Pace (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. While Pace is sidelined, Davis and Brian Asamoah will serve as Minnesota's rotational inside linebackers behind starters Blake Cashman and Kamu Grugier-Hill.
The Packers signed Davis to the practice squad Tuesday. Davis was released by the Commanders on Oct. 22 after seeing limited playing time on defense across five regular-season games, during which he accumulated 13 tackles (eight solo). Davis gives the Packers additional depth at linebacker, and the 2021 first-round pick could be elevated for Sunday's game against the Lions if starting outside linebacker Quay Walker is unable to clear concussion protocols.
The Commanders released Davis on Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports. Davis, the Commanders' first-round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, has seen his playing time this season diminish as he regressed to a rotational role behind starting defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (ribs) and Clelin Ferrell. Davis' tenure with Washington will end with 282 combined tackles, including 7.0 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries across 50 regular-season games (including 36 starts). The 25-year-old will explore his options and look for a fresh start elsewhere.
Davis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Giants, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Davis has started in 28 games for the Commanders over the last two seasons, but he did not start in Week 1 against the Buccaneers and he finished the contest with three tackles (two solo) while playing just 16 snaps (13 on defense, three on special teams). With Washington going to a 3-4 scheme under head coach Dan Quinn, Davis doesn't appear to have an established role in the defense to start the regular season. The 2021 first-round pick's next chance at suiting up will be Week 3 against the Bengals on Sept. 23.
Coach Dan Quinn said Thursday the Commanders are providing Davis (shoulder) an opportunity to compete for edge-rusher snaps this offseason, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports. Quinn said "we're trying to really push [Davis] specifically on the versatility," and that "you'll see him working some with the defensive line, you'll see him working with [pass rush specialist] Ryan Kerrigan on the side." Davis is entering a contract season after having his fifth-year option declined, and the additions of Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu raise questions about the extent of his role. Also contributing as a pass rusher on at least a rotational basis would help boost Davis' fantasy ceiling in IDP formats. He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery back in December, but it appears that Davis has already resumed taking reps at spring practices.
The Commanders are declining the fifth-year option on Davis' (shoulder) rookie contract, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports. Washington took Davis with the 19th pick in the 2021 Draft, and while he's started 36 of 45 games through three seasons, his elite athleticism (4.47 40, 42-inch vertical) hasn't translated to elite performance. The 25-year-old likely will be a starter again in 2024 under new coach Dan Quinn, but it won't come as any surprise if this ends up being Davis' final year in Washington. He had season-ending shoulder surgery in December, potentially impacting his participation in spring practices.
