The Denver Broncos had to swallow their pride when standout center Lloyd Cushenberry left in free agency following the 2023 season, lured away by the Tennessee Titans and a 4-year, $50 million contract.

The financially-challenged Broncos, facing $85 million in dead cap space over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, couldn’t afford to pay everyone they wanted in the offseason. Cushenberry’s exit was an unfortunate side effect.

Now, the future is bright in Denver with a star rookie quarterback in Bo Nix and key pieces in place around him for the long term. That was evidenced by 2 huge deals before the 2024 season — signing Quinn Meinerz to a 4-year, $72 million contract extension and NFL All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a 4-year, $96 million contract extension.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine thinks the Broncos could continue to fill out their roster by replacing Cushenberry with Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dalman in free agency in 2025.

Dalman has only played 4 games in 2024 — he played in the first 3 games before injuring his ankle then returned for a Week 11 loss to the Broncos.

“Drew Dalman will have to be considered if the Broncos are interested in upgrading the position,” Ballentine wrote. “He has gone through his own growing pains and now has to be considered an asset for the Falcons offensive line. He has missed all but (four) games this year due to injury, but he’s only 26 and just hitting his prime.”

Calculating What Dalman Might Cost in Free Agency

Dalman made the “10 NFL Players Who Deserve to Get Paid in 2025” list from Heavy.com’s Daniel Arwas, coming in at No. 4 and as the highest ranked offensive lineman to make the cut.

“Drew Dalman has quietly become one of the top centers in the game over the past couple of years, grading out with a fantastic 78.9 PFF grade in 2024,” Arwas wrote on November 8. “With his rookie contract up in 2021, barring injury or tragic event, Dalman can almost start counting his cash.”

Dalman was a fourth round pick (No. 114 overall) by the Falcons in the 2021 NFL draft after he was a 2-time All-Pac-12 pick at Stanford. He played in all 17 games as a backup as a rookie before becoming the Falcons’ full-time starter in 2022. He’s also a second generation NFL player. His father, offensive lineman Chris Dalman, was also an All-Pac-12 pick at Stanford and played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1993 to 2000, winning a Super Bowl in 1994.

How much the Broncos might have to pay Dalman could be anybody’s guess. According to Over the Cap, the top 5 highest paid centers have an average contract value of $57 million while the next 5 highest paid centers have an average contract value of $22 million.

One starting point for the Broncos might be the 3-year, $30 million contract signed by Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz in March 2024.

Wattenberg Hasn’t Made Most of Opportunity

Cushenberry’s replacement, Luke Wattenberg, has started 8 games for the Broncos in 2024 — he missed 4 games with an ankle injury — but has underwhelmed.

PFF currently has Dalman with a 61.4 grade for 2024. Although he hasn’t allowed any sacks, he’s also been called for 4 penalties.

“(The Broncos) have to go to work this offseason to make sure Nix has everything he needs to succeed,” Ballentine wrote. “That could involve a change at the pivot where Luke Wattenberg just hasn’t secured the job.”

]]>
If things hold up for Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper, he’s headed for the kind of payday seventh round draft picks hardly ever see.

Cooper is already being projected as a hot free-agent commodity following the 2024 season, with Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder predicting Cooper will land with the NFC South’s Atlanta Falcons in 2025.

“Cooper may not be the most recognizable name on the open market this spring, but he’s been a very productive pass-rusher over the last two seasons,” Holder wrote. “According to Pro Football Focus, he generated 55 pressures on 421 pass-rush snaps in 2023 and is on pace to surpass that figure in 2024 with 29 on 194, heading into the weekend.”

Cooper is having a breakout season at the exact right time in his career. Through 8 games and the Broncos off to a surprising 5-3 start, he has 31 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 11 QB hits and 1 fumble recovery.

Cooper has arguably been the Broncos’ second-best defensive player this year behind NFL All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who signed a 4-year, $96 million contract extension in September 2024.

Cooper Projected to Land $56 Million Contract

Sports Illustrated’s Bob Morris used the 3-year, $51 million contract Bryce Huff signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency in March 2024 as the template for Cooper’s potential deal.

“If Cooper continues to play at his current level, a three-year, $56M deal with $35M guaranteed would be reasonable,” Morris wrote. “If the Broncos get a deal done during the season, they could consider an option bonus for 2025 to lower his cap number that year, but it’s not absolutely necessary.”

Cooper’s Longtime Teammate Benched After Injury

The Broncos got both outside linebacker Baron Browning and Cooper out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL draft, taking Browning in the third round (No. 105 overall) and Cooper in the seventh round (No. 239 overall).

Of those 2 players, it’s been Cooper who has continued to deliver. That includes career highs of 72 tackles, 55 QB pressures and a team-leading 8.5 sacks in 2023, when he started all 17 games.

Browning, on the other hand, seems to be coming to the end of his time with the Broncos after he started the season as a starter but after a foot injury landed him on injured reserve lost his starting spot to Nik Bonitto.

“A converted off-the-ball LB who had 4.5 sacks last year, Browning’s playing time has dwindled in Denver and he’s in a contract year,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero wrote on October 26. “He could be available. Denver has depth at the position.”

Through 3-plus seasons, Cooper has 18.5 sacks and Browning has 9.5 sacks.

“However, the Broncos might not be able to keep Browning and Cooper, which could be another reason they took edge rusher Jonah Elliss in the third round of April’s draft,” wrote the Denver Post’s Ryan McFadden. “If Denver happens to face that dilemma, Cooper may have the edge due to his ability to stay on the field. Browning played in his third game of the season on Thursday against New Orleans. He missed the previous four games while on injured reserve with a foot injury and missed seven games during the 2023 season.”

The lack of an extra camera angle may have cost the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a victory — and an all-time great defensive play — in a Week 8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

After Tampa Bay’s 31-26 loss to the Falcons on October 27, the buzz following the game seemed to center on a play in the second quarter in which Atlanta tight end Kyle Pitts scored a 49-yard touchdown — his second touchdown of the game — until replay appeared to show NFL All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. knock the ball out of Pitts’ hands right before he crossed the goal line.

According to NFL Fox rules analyst Mike Pereira, the call wasn’t able to be overturned because there wasn’t a camera set up right at the goal line.

“(The refs) didn’t have a down the line shot,” Pereira said.

The touchdown tied the score at 14-14.

“Basically, there wasn’t a down the line angle, which potentially screwed the Bucs out of an incredible play,” wrote FanSided’s Josh Hill on his official X account.

Winfield, who signed a 4-year, $84.1 million contract extension in the offseason, made a similar play in 2023 against the Falcons, when he stripped quarterback Desmond Ridder of the ball at the goal line.

“Antoine Winfield got absolutely robbed,” wrote Faceoff Sports Network’s Aaron Schill

Pitts Torched Buccaneers on National Tight Ends Day

Pitts had arguably the best game of his career against the Buccaneers, finishing with 4 receptions for 91 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns — he also scored the game’s first touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Kirk Cousins in the first quarter.

Pitts was part of a wave of tight ends who had massive games on, if you can believe it, National Tight Ends Day. Tampa Bay tight end Cade Otton also had one of the best games of his career with star wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin Jr. out with injuries, coming up with 9 receptions for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, who created the “holiday” in 2018 and designated it as the fourth Sunday in October every year, had 6 receptions for 128 yards and 1 touchdown in a win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce also had a breakout game with 10 receptions for 90 yards and 1 touchdown — his first of the season — in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride had 9 receptions for 124 yards in a comeback win over the Miami Dolphins.

“On Sunday, tight ends compiled 177 catches, a single-day record, according to NFL research, and 14 different tight ends found the end zone,” wrote CBS Sports’ Zachary Pereles.

Buccaneers Have Bigger Issues Moving Forward

The loss to the Falcons may have just underlined something Buccaneers’ fans have seemed to know since the season started — Tampa Bay has one of the NFL’s worst defenses.

After 8 weeks of the regular season, the Buccaneers’ are ranked 30th out of 32 NFL teams in team defense and are giving up a whopping 387.5 yards per game. The worst 3 defenses in the NFL are all in the NFC South, with Tampa Bay just a hair’s breath ahead of the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints.

The Atlanta Falcons don’t have the illustrious history at quarterback that some other franchises do, but there are certainly some impressive, memorable names to have represented the Peach State in the NFL.

It is somewhat ironic, however — and Atlanta fans may want to close their eyes for this part — that perhaps the best quarterback to have been drafted by the organization never started a game for them: three-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion Brett Favre.

Although the Falcons have been around for just over half a century, there are more than enough competent starting quarterbacks to make this list a healthy one.

Check out our ranking of the 10 best Falcons QBs of all time.

10. Kirk Cousins (2024 – Present)

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings

GettyKirk Cousins.

As the kids say, “Don’t @ me.” We are fully aware that Kirk Cousins has only played six games in a Falcons uniform, and we are also fully aware that under his offensive stewardship in 2024, the team are currently 4-2; atop the NFC South; and most importantly, watchable, for the first time in the best part of half a decade. Highlighted, of course, by a scorching 509 yard game in a win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5.

Cousins may not have the games or the pedigree in a Falcons outfit as other members of this list, but he certainly warrants a place in the top 10 (especially given some of the alternatives). Expect Cousins to soar up this list over the next couple of years if his play remains at a high level, and he manages to keep 1st round draft pick Michael Penix Jr. on the bench.

9. Bob Lee (1973 – 1974)

bob lee falcons ai likeness

Heavy on Falcons with AIBob Lee likeness.

Bob Lee was actually acquired by the Falcons from Minnesota in exchange for another member of this list, Bob Berry, back in 1973 — and only as a backup. And initially the trade paid dividends, with Lee leading Atlanta to an impressive 8-2 record in his debut season in Atlanta, coming in for the out-of-form Dick Shiner after the first four weeks. Lee was also one of the foremost dual-threat QBs of his era, generating 168 yards rushing (which was a lot more back then) in his 19 starts in Georgia.

8. David Archer (1984 – 1987)

dave archer falcons

Another mobile quarterback who was never expected to become the starter on the team. Although Dave Archer is now more commonly known for working the Falcons in a different fashion — as their color commentator — he was also the starting QB for two years in 1985 and ’86. While Archer was a competent passer, recording a combined 3,999 over his first two seasons, his best feature was his legs: he led all NFL quarterbacks in rushing in both of his starting seasons, and holds a combined 9-12-1 record.

7. Jeff George (1994 – 1996)

jeff george falcons

GettyJeff George.

Had it not been for a highly publicized disagreement between him and former head coach June Jones, George may well have lasted considerably longer in Atlanta, and consequently would have been substantially higher on this list. Despite starting for five different NFL teams during his career, George did some of his best work for the Falcons, putting up career highs in yards, completions and completion percentage during his three-year stint. He also became the first Falcons quarterback to throw for over 4000 yards (4,143), and only the third to bring Atlanta to the playoffs, in 1995.

6. Bob Berry (1968 – 1972)

bob berry falcons

GettyBob Berry, 1972.

The Atlanta Falcons’ first-ever Pro Bowl quarterback made quite the impression on then head coach Hall of Famer Norm Van Brocklin back in 1968. So much so that he abandoned ship with first-ever Falcons starting QB Randy Johnson and inserted Berry.

Berry has a spotty statistical record with the franchise, both in individual merits and team accomplishments, going 19-28-3 across his five seasons, and never passing for greater than 2200 yards in a single season. Yet the strong-armed Oregon alum had very impressive big-play ability that kept the then very new Atlanta Falcons in any game.

5. Chris Miller (1987-1993)

chris miller falcons

GettyChris Miller in 1993.

The second consecutive University of Oregon QB to make it onto this list! Miller also led the team at quarterback for five consecutive seasons before being replaced by Bobby Hebert in 1993, and ultimately leaving for the Los Angeles Rams in 1994.

Miller was never an elite-level, upper echelon quarterback, and suffered through multiple losing seasons with the franchise. However, he did find success in 1991, where he brought the Falcons to a 9-5 record, posting a career high in touchdown passes in the process, before being knocked out by Washington in the Divisional round.

4. Chris Chandler (1997-2001)

chris chandler falcons

GettyChris Chandler.

The run of exactly five-year starters continues, and this time it comes in the form of deep-ball throwing Chris Chandler. Chandler had already had almost a 10-year career in the league prior to being traded to the Falcons but continued to perform reasonably well in Atlanta for a team that had been struggling in recent times.

The highlight of Chandler’s career came in the 1998 season, where he drove the Falcons to a 13-1 record and brought them to the brink of an inaugural Lombardi Trophy, when they ultimately lost to the Denver Broncos in the 1999 Super Bowl.

3. Michael Vick (2001 – 2008)

michael vick

GettyMichael Vick.

The only Falcons quarterback, to our knowledge, to have ever spent substantial time in prison, Michael Vick’s professional career was marred by well-known off-the-field issues. However, Vick was not only a weapon on the field, but a true pioneer of the modern day dual-threat quarterback (and perhaps the greatest ever Madden player), who paved the ways for current dynamic stars Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts — to name but a few. The ex-Virginia Tech standout had some of his best years of his career in Atlanta, making three Pro Bowls and reaching the playoffs twice during his time with the Falcons.

2. Steve Bartkowski (1975-1985)

steve bartkowski falcons

GettySteve Bartkowski.

The second most tenured Atlanta Falcons quarterback on this list, behind only the (somewhat obvious) No. 1 QB. Despite coming in with an already substantial pedigree, Bartkowski’s story is truly one of resilience. After being drafted No. 1 overall in 1975 by the Falcons, knee injuries in 1976 threatened to derail his promising career. Yet, even after being benched in the pre-season in 1978, Bartkowski managed to re-assert himself as the starter and held the quarterback position for the next seven years, reaching the Pro Bowl twice and leading the NFL in both passing touchdowns and passer rating in separate seasons.

1. Matt Ryan (2008-2021)

matt ryan

GettyMatt Ryan.

Quite honestly, the only player that deserves this No. 1 spot. Although Ryan’s career never yielded the elusive Lombardi Trophy that it perhaps warranted, the former No. 3 overall pick was routinely a Top 12 quarterback during his time in the NFL, culminating with a defeat in the 2017 Super Bowl in the most spectacular fashion against the New England Patriots. The league MVP and four-time Pro Bowler holds essentially every meaningful QB franchise record — and almost all by some margin, including completions, yards and touchdown passes. He is the clear GOAT of Falcons quarterbacks, and for some, perhaps even a Hall of Famer.

Find out who just missed the list and sound off in the comments!

]]>
The Washington Commanders have had few memorable quarterbacks in recent memory. One of the most memorable was Taylor Heinicke, who started for the Commanders in a playoff game following the 2020 season before becoming the team’s primary starter for the next 2 seasons.

Now, Heinicke is waiting on his NFL fate to be determined with the Atlanta Falcons as NFL teams cut their rosters down to 53 players on Aug. 27.

Heinicke signed a 2-year, $14 million contract with the Falcons in March 2023 and backed up Desmond Ridder, who flamed out as Heinicke became the starter late in the year. Heinicke was presumed to be the backup to free-agent signee Kirk Cousins in 2024 until the Falcons shocked the football world and drafted Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall.

“It’s one of those stressful times,” Heinicke told Sports Illustrated after the Falcons’ 31-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason finale on Aug. 23. “It’s really the worst time of the NFL for all these guys, just not knowing where you’re going to be. For me personally, I did everything I could throughout OTAs and training camp.

“When I got the reps, I tried to go in there and make the most of it. When I wasn’t in, I was trying to help Kirk and Mike in any way I could.”

From Undrafted to Starting NFL Quarterback

Heinicke was the FCS National Freshman of the Year at Old Dominion in 2011 then won the Walter Payton Award as the nation’s best FCS player in 2012. He continued to shine as ODU transitioned from FCS to the FBS, playing as an independent in 2013 and in Conference USA in 2014.

Wherever Heinicke was at, he balled out. He ended his college career with 14,959 passing yards, 1,320 rushing yards and 154 total touchdowns (132 passing, 22 rushing).

After going undrafted in 2015, Heinicke spent four seasons as a backup or practice squad player for the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers before he was out of football completely by 2019.

Heinicke was in the middle of taking classes to finish his engineering degree at ODU when he signed with the Commanders in Dec. 2020. After an injury to starter Alex Smith, he wound up starting a 31-23 NFC Wild Card playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and turned heads with his play, throwing for 304 yards and 1 touchdown while rushing for another score.

In 2021, Heinicke took over as the starter for the Commanders after Ryan Fitzpatrick was hurt in the season opener and ended up starting 15 games and going 7-8. He began 2022 as the backup to Carson Wentz and went 5-3-1 in 9 starts after Wentz fractured his finger in Week 6.

In 2023, Heinicke went 1-3 in 4 starts for the Falcons after Ridder was benched late in the season.

Heinicke: Atlanta Has ‘Best Roster I’ve Been Part of’

Heinicke was making his case publicly for the Falcons to keep 3 quarterbacks — something that would probably be smart considering the injury history of Cousins and Penix Jr.

Cousins is coming off a torn Achilles tendon in 2023. Penix Jr. tore his ACL twice during his college career.

“I would love to be a part of the Falcons,” Heinicke told the Falcons’ official website. “I think this is probably the best roster I’ve been a part of when you look at it from top to bottom. I think (head coach Raheem Morris) is building something special here, and I would love to be a part of it.”

Heinicke, 29, went 20-of-44 passing for 206 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in 3 preseason games.

The Atlanta Falcons offseason included some key additions to the team. The team signed Kirk Cousins while also drafting Michael Penix Jr. with the eight overall pick in the NFL Draft. Although most big names have already signed to new teams, there are still impact free agents still available. The Falcons were tabbed as the best fit for former third-round pick, Steven Nelson, according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen.

The Falcons’ biggest additions of the offseason came on the offensive side of the ball and on the coaching staff. They hired Raheem Morris as their new head coach after firing Arthur Smith. Morris had served as the interim head coach of the Falcons in 2020. However, he most recently served as the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams.

Nelson a Good Fit for Morris’ Defense

“The 47-year-old Morris spearheaded the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning defense as its coordinator in the 2021 season. He also has 59 games under his belt as an NFL head coach (17-31 with the Buccaneers; 4-7 with the Falcons),” NFL.com’s Grant Gordon wrote of Morris.

Morris’ defense will likely be zone-heavy in 2024, making Nelson a good fit.

“Last season in Houston, Nelson tied a career high with four interceptions and also had seven pass breakups. At his best when he can key inside to read the quarterback, he’s a fit for coach Raheem Morris’ scheme, which tends to be more zone-heavy. In 2023 with the Rams, Morris’ unit played zone coverage on 60.1% of opponent dropbacks, majoring in split-safety zone and Cover 3. This is a good spot for Nelson, and it’d give the Falcons more veteran competition in camp,” wrote Bowen.

Nelson has played nine seasons in the NFL. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. From 2019-2021 he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans.

Nelson has started 115 of his 130 career games and has recorded 13 interceptions. He has made 374 tackles as well.

Falcons Offseaosn

The Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract that includes a no-trade clause. Cousins spent the last six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, leading them to two playoff appearances. A three-time Pro Bowler, he threw for 23,265 yards and 171 touchdowns as a Viking. However, the Falcons still shocked the NFL when they drafted a quarterback in the first round.

“Kirk Cousins is our quarterback,” Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said in a post-draft press conference. “We’re very excited about Kirk. We’re very excited about this team. Michael Penix, we’re talking about the future. You look at the future. You look at the big picture. We are very excited about that quarterback room, and again, Kirk is our quarterback. But adding Michael Penix is thinking about the future.”

The Falcons’ selection of Penix is a move they described as thinking about the future. If all things go well, they don’t anticipate being in a position to draft a player like Penix in the future.

“It’s pretty simple for us,” head coach Raheem Morris said at the post-draft press conference. “When you get Kirk Cousins, and you talk about short-term winning and talk about winning right now, which we know we will be in a position to do, we won’t have the ability to be picking this high again with the guy that we got.”

The Falcons did not do much in the offseason to bolster their defense. Nelson could be a key addition.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed former San Francisco 49ers tight end Ross Dwelley, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

“Falcons signed former 49ers tight end Ross Dwelley, who started 17 games during his six seasons in San Francisco,” Schefter posted on X.

Dwelley, 29 years old, didn’t play much during his six seasons with the 49ers, posting 44 receptions for 518 yards and five touchdowns. This was the second 49ers tight end the Falcons signed this offseason as they signed Charlie Woerner to a three-year, $12 million deal earlier in the offseason.

The Falcons needed depth in the tight-end room and added just that by signing Dwelley.

Atlanta Falcons Needs After NFL Draft

The Atlanta Falcons made the surprise decision to draft Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in the draft. That decision led to them still having multiple needs they must address, according to Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.

“However, by picking Penix, Atlanta passed on a prospect who could help it win in 2024,” Bleacher Report wrote on May 13. “Specifically, the Falcons passed up the opportunity to add an elite edge-rusher, which could have addressed a long-standing position of need.”

Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department gave three ‘realistic targets’ for the Falcons to pursue, listing Calais Campbell, Shaquille Leonard, and Eli Apple.

“Atlanta should continue adding to a defense that ranked 18th in points allowed last season, and it should target players who could be open to a low-value prove-it deal. Linebacker Shaquille Leonard, for example, was released by the Indianapolis Colts in-season and failed to impress after latching on with Philadelphia,” BR wrote. “A return to form would give a big boost to Atlanta’s 20th-ranked run defense.

“Cornerback Eli Apple was merely a role player for the Dolphins in 2023 after spending two seasons as a Cincinnati Bengals starter. He could help replace nine-game starter Jeff Okudah.”

Campbell spent the 2023-24 season with the Falcons, posting 6.5 sacks and 32 solo tackles. The 37-year-old had a productive season for someone his age.

Leonard, still only 28 years old, could be a perfect buy-low option for the Falcons. He’s impressed in previous seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, but struggled with the Philadelphia Eagles when he landed with them in 2023.

Apple, who has played for four different teams since 2019, had one interception and allowed 494 yards on 66 targets last season for the Miami Dolphins.

Falcons Tight End Room Is Full

With the decision to sign Dwelley, the Atlanta Falcons tight end room should be full. The room features Kyle Pitts, Woerner, Dwelley, and John FitzPatrick.

Dwelley will bring them experience as he played in 84 of a possible 99 regular-season games with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Terrin Waack, the Falcons’ digital team reporter.

“Dwelley comes to Atlanta from the San Francisco 49ers, where he joined as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He played in 84 of a possible 99 regular-season games during his six seasons, starting 17,” Waack wrote on May 13. “His best year – 2020 – saw him total 245 yards receiving on 19 receptions, with one touchdown. Last year, he had 12 yards receiving on a single reception.”

The Atlanta Falcons offense will have a new look in 2024 with Kirk Cousins at quarterback. However, the Falcons have invested heavily in offensive weapons in the last few drafts, and are hoping their investments will pay off with a Pro Bowl quarterback. Bijan Robinson, the Falcons’ first-round pick in 2023, is poised for a huge year and is “capable of becoming a Christian McCaffrey-caliber weapon,” according to Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski.

The Falcons have drafted offensive skill positions in the first round of the last four drafts. The team selected Kyle Pitts with the No. 4 overall pick in 2021, Drake London with the No. 8 overall pick in 2022, Robinson with the No. 8 overall pick in 2022 and Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in 2023.

With four top-ten selections going toward offensive weapons, the Falcons are hoping Cousins can elevate their play. Robinson was named as a second-year player “Primed to Explode,” by Sobleski.

Falcons Looking to Maximize Robinson’s Pass-Catching Ability

Robinson led all running backs in receptions last season with 58. The Falcons’ entire offense was “previously hampered by poor quarterback play,” wrote Sobleski.

“Robinson can now be more of a weapon as a receiver. Yes, he led all rookie running backs with 58 receptions, but his overall utilization can be expanded to its fullest and executed more efficiently,” wrote Sobleski.

Robinson totaled 487 receiving yards with Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke playing quarterback. Despite the Falcons’ No. 17 ranked total offense, Robinson finished No. 10 in total yards with 1,463 yards from scrimmage.

“The offense should open up no matter who is behind center, particularly Cousins considering how well he can orchestrate a system. Furthermore, the 35-year-old has no problem simply turning around and handing the ball to his running back, as evidenced by four Pro Bowl seasons from Dalvin Cook while the two shared a backfield in Minnesota,” wrote Sobleski.

Cook was selected to four consecutive Pro Bowls with Cousins under center. The threat of Cousins’ arm creates more opportunities for running backs. The Falcons lacked that in 2023, but now hope Cousins can do for Robinson what he did for Cook.

Robison and McCaffery Comparison

McCaffery started his career with the Falcons division rival Carolina Panthers. Just like Robinson, McCaffery was the No. 8 overall pick. McCaffery started 10 games as a rookie and totaled 1,089 yards from scrimmage. His second-year jump was a big one.

In his second season, McCaffery totaled 1,965 yards from scrimmage and caught 107 passes. He was named a Second Team All-Pro. Similar to McCaffery, Robinson also possesses great ability in the open field.

After years of inconsistent quarterback play in Carolina, McCaffery was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Under Kyle Shanahan and consistency at quarterback, McCaffery scored 31 touchdowns in 27 games. He was named a First Team All-Pro in his first full season with the 49ers in 2023.

The Falcons are hoping for the arrival of Cousins to have a similar effect on Robinson.

“Even with all of the talent among the Falcons’ skill positions, Robinson could well be their offensive focal point and challenge to lead the league in yards from scrimmage this fall,” wrote Sobelski.

The NFL Draft has concluded, but teams are still finding ways to add to their rosters. With few premier free agents remaining, the Buffalo Bills have signed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones, the team announced on X. Jones was a Pro Bowl selection in 2017. In 2016 he finished third in the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. Jones is signing a one-year contract with the Bills.

Since being selected by the Falcons in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Bills will be Jones’ fourth team.

“Jones is a veteran linebacker with nine years of NFL experience. He has played for three teams since coming into the league as a second-round pick in 2016, most recently appearing in 13 games last year for the Panthers,” wrote Alec White and Maddy Glab for BuffaloBills.com.

Jones’ History With the Falcons

The Falcons selected Jones with the No. 52 selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. He appeared in 15 games for the Falcons as a rookie. He recorded three interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. His two pick-sixes led the NFL. Jones’ 108 tackles led the Falcons as a rookie. In the 2016 playoffs, Jones recorded an interception and forced fumble.

In 2017 Jones started all 16 games for the team. He recorded 138 tackles, one sack and three interceptions. He earned his lone career Pro Bowl selection.

After his 2018 season was cut short due to injury he signed a four-year, $57 million extension with the Falcons. He made all 48 starts over the next three seasons. He recorded 228 tackles, 25 tackles for a loss, 6 1/2 sacks, 17 passes defended, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and two interception returns for touchdowns.

Jones was placed on injured reserve on September 1 2022 and did not appear in a game for the Falcons. The Falcons traded Jones to the Cleveland Browns for a 2024 seventh-round pick. The Falcons received a 2024 NFL Draft sixth-round selection.

Jones’ Career After Atlanta

Jones appeared in 11 games for the Browns and made five starts. He recorded one interception, one forced fumble and 2 1/2 sacks. Jones signed with the Falcons division rival Carolina Panthers after the 2022 season.

Jones did not make the initial 53-man roster for the Panthers. However, he was eventually elevated. He appeared in 13 games for the Panthers, making three starts. He recorded one interception, one sack, six passes defended and four tackles for a loss.

Buffalo has solid depth behind projected starters Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard. Jones will fight for one of the depth spots with fifth-round pick Edefuan Ulofoshio, Dorian Williams, Nicholas Morrow and Baylon Spector.

Milano suffered a season-ending leg injury in week five of the 2023 season. Milano is expected to recover. However, Jones may have a chance for a bigger role on the Bills if Milano is not ready to start training camp.

“We’re very optimistic that he’ll be back. Hopefully, at the start of camp,” general manager Brandon Beane said on April 29.

Entering his ninth season as a pro, Jones has a chance to play a role on a contender led by Josh Allen. Jones played in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots in 2017. Ultimately, he is still looking for his first championship.

The post NFL Execs Blast Falcons for Questionable Decision in NFL Draft appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
The Atlanta Falcons made a surprise decision with the No. 8 pick in the NFL draft, selecting Michael Penix Jr. After signing Kirk Cousins to a $180 million contract six weeks prior, the expectation was for the Falcons to draft someone who would help the team next season.

NFL executives were shocked by the move, too, with one even hinting at Cousins being injured still after having Achilles surgery. Mike Sando of The Athletic reported what executives around the league said.

“There’s only one thing I could think of that would allow them to do that, and is that something happened in Kirk’s rehab (from a torn Achilles tendon) between when he signed and draft day that made them feel like, ‘Oh my god, we might not have him for more than a year,’” one exec said.

According to Sando, there’s “no indication” that Cousins is injured. Cousins was injured in 2023 after throwing for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Exec Suggested the Falcons Should’ve Traded for Fields or Wilson

Justin Fields and Russell Wilson both landed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Fields, a Georgia native, made sense for the Atlanta Falcons if they were going to draft Penix due to still being on his rookie contract.

According to Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Chicago, the Falcons “checked in” with the Chicago Bears before he was traded to the Steelers.

In Sando’s May 2 column exploring the thoughts of all 16 NFC teams during the draft, another executive believes they should’ve landed one of Wilson or Fields.

“I really like Penix, but if you are going to draft him, why would you not have taken Justin Fields from Chicago or signed Russell Wilson and then drafted Penix?” an exec said. “No one would fault you for that. They would have been much better off with money invested elsewhere. And the thing about Penix is, he is ready to play now. He is not the rookie QB that needs to wait.”

Wilson is being paid just $1.2 million by the Steelers, according to Spotrac. That’s a massive difference from what they paid Cousins.

Kirk Cousins Was ‘Disappointed’ Over Michael Penix Jr. Pick

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Cousins and his agent Mike McCartney were surprised by the decision to draft Penix. The Atlanta Falcons never brought up drafting a quarterback with the pick.

“Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming,” McCartney said. “We got no heads up, Kirk got a call from the Falcons when they were on the clock. That was the first we heard. It never came up in any conversation.”

Jane Slater of NFL Network reported on April 25 that Cousins was “disappointed” with the decision

“As we all sit in shock over the Atlanta pick, a source tells me Kirk Cousins just as “shocked” and “disappointed,” Slater tweeted. “Never said anything to him or his reps about a QB in 1st round despite suggesting they would.”

The situation is a rare one, mainly due to the money the Falcons spent on the 35-year-old Cousins.

The post NFL Insider Suggests Scenario in Which Falcons Could Trade Kirk Cousins appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
The Atlanta Falcons made headlines when they selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft even though they’d signed veteran Kirk Cousins to four-year deal in March.

But Atlanta could “theoretically trade Cousins to a place he wants to go” for 2025 if the 2024 Falcons are “not winning a lot of games,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said April 30 on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

The <a href="http://Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract that includes a no-trade clause. Cousins spent the last six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, leading them to two playoff appearances. A three-time Pro Bowler, he threw for 23,265 yards and 171 touchdowns as a Viking.

Scenario for Trading Kirk Cousins

The Falcons’ selection of Penix is a move they described as thinking about the future.

Cousins has $90 million of his $180 million contract guaranteed over the next two seasons. Rapoport suggested that if Cousins is playing well but the team is not necessarily succeeding, the Falcons could trade Cousins and move into the Penix era.

“[D]o you play Penix if he’s good enough?” Rapoport said. “Then maybe you do … You could theoretically trade cousins to a place he would want to go to the next season and then you have your franchise guy.”

Falcons’ Future at Quarterback

“We’re very excited about where Kirk is,” Fontenot said. “We feel very confident in him and everything he’s going to do for us. Again, we’re thinking more long-term with this. We’re very, very excited about Kirk. That has not changed. This is thinking about the future.”

The Falcons discussed the “Green Bay model,” said Morris. The Green Bay Packers selected Aaron Rodgers in the first round when they had Brett Favre in 2005. In 2020, they selected Jordan Love in the first round when they had Rodgers. Rodgers and Love both sat for three seasons before becoming the starter.

The Falcons are looking at the success the Packers had with Love and Rodgers learning from a veteran. The plan for the Falcons is likely to let Cousins play until they feel Penix is ready to take over and then trade him. However, the team will not regret the pick even if Cousins continues to shine through the length of his deal.

“If you believe in a quarterback, you have to take him. And if he sits for four or five years, that’s a great problem to have because we’re doing so well at that position,” Fontenot said. “So, it’s as simple as, if you see a guy you believe in at that position, you have to take him.”

Bears Tabbed ‘Best Fit’ For Former Falcons 6-Time Pro Bowl Selection https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/atlanta-falcons/chicago-bears-calais-campbell/?adt_ei=[email] https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/atlanta-falcons/chicago-bears-calais-campbell/#respond Tue, 30 Apr 2024 21:50:14 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=5007774 The Chicago Bears were named a fit for former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Calais Campbell in free agency.

The post Bears Tabbed ‘Best Fit’ For Former Falcons 6-Time Pro Bowl Selection appeared first on Heavy Sports.

With the NFL draft concluding, free agents now have a better understanding of positions certain teams need. Former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Calais Campbell is still on the market, one of many veteran defensive players searching for a home. Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team listed the best fits for available free agents, naming Campbell a fit for the Chicago Bears.

“The Chicago Bears have a lot going for them after selecting Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze in the first round. That pairing, along with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, could give Chicago an impressive offense capable of keeping up with one of the league’s best defenses from the second half of last season,” Pizzuta wrote in his April 29 column exploring the top fits for remaining free agents. “The unit ranked third in EPA per play from Week 10 on.

“Montez Sweat’s addition was a huge piece of that, but the Bears still lack other impact players along the defensive line. The only additions were free agents Jake Martin and Byron Cowart and fifth-round pick Austin Booker.”

Calais Campbell ‘Leaning Towards Playing’ in 2024

Campbell told reporters that he was leaning toward playing again as he’s 37-year-old, but was going to take until around March to come up with a decision, according to Kelly Price of Fox 5 Sports Atlanta.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said he was looking forward to getting a chance to speak with Campbell as he was impressed with his “football character,” according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I look forward to get a chance to sit in front of him because he’s certainly as impressive as it gets when it comes to football character,” Morris said on April 4. “He’s had as an impressive of a career that you can have. . . . I’m looking [forward] to discussing that in further detail with him at a later date.”

Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot told reporters prior to the NFL draft that he was focusing on the draft and then would focus on addressing free agents. When asked about Campbell, he said he won’t “close any doors,” according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk.

“Again, no update at this point but we’ll never close any doors,” Fontenot said on April 24. “Once we get through the draft, we always go through the players that are available and what we can do. It’s a 24/7, 365 process, the roster-building. We’re never stopping. The roster’s never set. We won’t close any doors.”

If Campbell signs with the Chicago Bears or any other team in free agency, it’d be his 17th season in the NFL.

Would Bring the Chicago Bears Another Veteran

The Chicago Bears have put together an impressive team, currently producing a defense with Montez Sweat, Jaylon Johnson, and others. Adding Campbell would give them another veteran who can still produce, despite his age.

The six-time Pro Bowl selection had 6.5 sacks for the Atlanta Falcons last season, producing the most since the 2018 season. Campbell has 105.5 sacks, 175 tackles for a loss, and 254 quarterback hits in his career.

His market value, according to Spotrac, is $7.5 million. As a cheap defensive option, he’d bring value back to the Falcons or with a new team like the Bears.

The post Falcons Pick Up 5th-Year Option for Kyle Pitts appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
The Atlanta Falcons made headlines on draft day when they drafted quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the draft. Penix is the latest of four consecutive top-ten draft selections by the Falcons. On April 29, the Falcons picked up the fifth-year option for their 2021 first-round pick, tight end Kyle Pitts.

Pitts was selected with the fourth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Pitts was the highest-selected tight end ever. He was just the second tight end ever to be selected in the first five picks. Pitts signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $32.9 million rookie contract with the Falcons.

As with all first-round contracts, the deal came with a fifth-year option. With the May 2 deadline to pick up the option looming, the Falcons made their decision.

Pitts’ Potential Contract Extension

The 23-year-old tight end will be playing his fourth season as a pro in 2024. With the option being picked up the Falcons have until the start of his fifth season in 2025 to offer him an extension.

“Now, per league rules, the Falcons can offer Pitts a contract extension before his fifth season (2025) since they did not do so before his fourth,” wrote AtlantaFalcons.com’s Terrin Waack. “A recent example of this in action can be seen in what the Falcons did with offensive lineman Chris Lindstrom. He was their No. 14 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Falcons picked up his fifth-year option in 2022 and then offered him a contract extension in 2023. He’s now contracted with the team through 2028.”

Pitts’ contract is currently the 12th-highest valued amongst tight ends, according to Spotrac. He will earn $10.878 million in his option year, according to NBC Sport’s Josh Alper.

Expectations for Pitts in 2024

Pitts came into the league with high expectations due to his position and how the Falcons selected him. As a rookie, he had 68 receptions for 1,026 yards and a touchdown. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and played in all 17 games.

However, since then the Falcons’ uncertainty at quarterback and injuries have slowed Pitts down. Pitts suffered a season-ending injury in 2022 and had a down year statistically in 2023, largely due to inconsistent quarterback play. Still, the Falcons view Pitts as a difference-maker and hope for a big year out of him.

“He’s the mayor of Atlanta,” Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said in March at the Annual League Meetings, according to Waack. “I think he wants to come back and have a highly productive year. I think he is excited about his partnership with some of the guys that we’ve brought in.”

The Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract in free agency. Cousins, 35, tore his Achilles in 2023, but will likely bring consistency to the quarterback position in 2024.

“The hope is Cousins will return consistency to the quarterback position for the first time since — arguably — Pitts was drafted. Since Pitts joined, he has worked with four different starting quarterbacks: Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke,” wrote Waack.

Cousins was selected to three Pro Bowls during his time with the Minnesota Vikings and could be a huge boost to Pitts and the entire Falcons offense.

The Atlanta Falcons made a surprise pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, selecting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington. After signing Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year, $180 million deal in the offseason, selecting Penix wasn’t what many envisioned. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, was surprised.

“Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming,” McCartney said. “We got no heads up, Kirk got a call from the Falcons when they were on the clock. That was the first we heard. It never came up in any conversation.”

Kirk Cousins ‘Disappointed’ Over Pick

Cousins, according to Jane Slater of NFL Network, was “disappointed” that the Atlanta Falcons never made him aware of them drafting a quarterback in the first round.

“As we all sit in shock over the Atlanta pick, a source tells me Kirk Cousins just as “shocked” and “disappointed,” Slater tweeted. “Never said anything to him or his reps about a QB in 1st round despite suggesting they would.”

Drafting a quarterback wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but it was the fact that the Falcons used the No. 8 pick in the draft to fill that need

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that Cousins understood a quarterback would be considered. However, Cousins didn’t believe one would be taken in the first round.

“The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know. From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round,” Russini tweeted. “I’m told he’s a bit stunned.”

Marc Raimondi of ESPN wrote that McCartney is frustrated over the Falcons not using the first-round pick to make the team better next season.

“Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that the Falcons only notified the QB that they’d pick Penix while the team was on the clock,” Raimondi wrote. “McCartney said there is frustration and confusion coming from Cousins’ camp because Atlanta did not use its first-round pick to make the team better in 2024.”

Rome Odunze, Brock Bowers, Dallas Turner, and others were still available at No. 8 and filled other needs.

Michael Penix Jr. Had Arguably ‘Best Pure Arm’ in the Draft

While the decision to draft Penix came as a surprise for Cousins, his 2023 season saw him throw for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He’s death with multiple injuries, but when healthy, the left-handed 23-year-old quarterback threw for over 4,640 yards in both seasons at Washington.

Raimondi wrote that the numbers were great and so was the tape.

“The numbers were excellent and so was the tape on Penix, who had arguably the best pure arm of any quarterback in the entire draft,” Raimondi wrote. “But his injury history made him a major question mark for NFL teams.”

According to Raimondi, Penix understands that he’ll learn from Cousins with the Atlanta Falcons.

“He’s been in the league,” Penix said. “He’s been in there for a while. He’s played a lot of football. I feel like I’m going to come in and I’m going to learn. I’m going to learn from him.”

“Bengals three-time Pro-Bowl DE Trey Hendrickson has requested to be traded from Cincinnati, per league source,” Schefter tweeted on April 24. “Hendrickson is due to make $15 million this season, and is looking for more long-term security than Cincinnati has been willing to offer.”

Woodroof wrote that the Falcons need an edge rusher and general manager Terry Fontenot was with the New Orleans Saints in 2017 when the team drafted Hendrickson.

“The Falcons desperately need an impact edge rusher, whether it’s acquiring one in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft or making a move for someone like Hendrickson. Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot was in New Orleans when Hendrickson was drafted in 2017, and new head coach Raheem Morris (above) could use someone experienced like Hendrickson to help his return to Atlanta go as well as it can,” Woodroof Wrote. “The Falcons could send a few picks Cincy’s way and finally get the edge rusher the franchise has been looking for since John Abraham.”

How Trey Hendrickson Would Help the Falcons

Hendrickson posted the second most sacks in the NFL last season with 17.5. In three of his past four seasons, the 29-year-old has had at least 13.5 sacks.

During the past four seasons, his ability to get to the quarterback has been just one of the best in football, posting 53 combined sacks in those four seasons. Hendrickson has also stayed on the field, playing in at least 15 games in those four years.

Josiah Caswell of Pro Football Network also listed the Atlanta Falcons as a landing spot for Hendrickson,

“One of the top teams that should be interested in Hendrickson’s services is the Atlanta Falcons, who had to play against him twice a year from 2017-20. The Falcons have suffered from a lack of pass rush for years and look to improve that this offseason.

“With their focus likely on the draft, potentially taking an EDGE then, the Falcons could redirect their attention to a proven commodity in Hendrickson,” Caswell wrote in his April 24 column listing landing spots for the pass rusher. “Atlanta has eight picks in the 2024 NFL Draft it could trade, including two third-rounders, one second-rounder, and the eighth overall pick.”

His Agent Is Looking for Long-Term Security

Hendrickson’s agent, Harold Lewis, told Ben Baby of ESPN they’re looking for a long-term investment from the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Our No. 1 goal is to get a long-term commitment from them,” Lewis said. “If we can’t, then we’re asking for a trade. And hopefully if he gets traded, that’s what we do — get a long-term commitment with somewhere else.”

The Atlanta Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal this offseason, which could be the window in which they’re looking to win. Adding Cousins, who will make $180 million over those four years, gives the front office even more of a reason to land a player of Hendrickson’s caliber this offseason.

Heading into the NFL draft, few players have been linked to the Atlanta Falcons more than Alabama pass rusher Dallas Turner. During an exclusive interview with Heavy Sports, Turner discussed his recent workout with the Falcons, pre-draft preparation and his partnership with Old Spice.

In addition to meeting days before the NFL draft, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star revealed there has been “real good energy” with the Falcons. Atlanta holds the No. 8 pick in the NFL draft, and Turner has been a popular prediction in mocks.

“Yeah, I was with them [the Falcons] on Sunday [April 21], I had a workout in Tuscaloosa with them on Sunday,” Turner told Heavy Sports in an April 25, 2024 interview. “Terry [Fontenot], Raheem [Morris]… They were real good people, for sure, on my visit. …Real good people.

“Sounds like they really trying to change the culture and turn it around over there and stuff like that. I’m real familiar with the area of Atlanta. It’s just been real good conversations and real good energy between me and the coaching staff.”

Dallas Turner on Falcons Rumors: ‘It Would Be a Little Bit Similar of How I Was Used at Alabama’

It would not be a surprise if the Falcons turn to the defensive side of the ball with their first pick. The question is whether Atlanta will snag Turner, another defender or trade down. Turner noted that the Falcons indicated the team would utilize him as a linebacker, similar to how he played as a star at Alabama.

“It would be a little bit similar of how I was used at Alabama as an outside linebacker,” Turner said of the Falcons’ plans. “Majority of the time I’m going to be rushing, but sometimes I am capable of dropping [in coverage], too. And also, you know, you gotta stop the run. They [want] all downs.”

NFL Draft Rumors: Dallas Turner Is Drawing Comparisons to Pro Bowler Brian Burns

Tuner posted 53 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks for the Crimson Tide in 2023. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein sees similarities between Turner and two-time Pro Bowler Brian Burns.

“Long and athletic with the explosive traits needed to become an impactful NFL pass rusher,” Zierlein detailed in his pre-draft profile of the former Bama standout. “Turner’s first-step quickness and elite closing burst are important building blocks, but he still needs to work on his process from Point A to Point B.

“… A team would be wise to widen him out and allow him a better runway to ignite his burst and overwhelm tackles with his speed. He’s added 20 pounds since coming to Alabama, but he struggles at times to stack and shed run blockers or set a firm edge. Turner’s frame and game are much less developed than Will Anderson Jr.’s coming out of Alabama last year, so it could take time for him to make his mark as a starting 3-4 outside linebacker.”

Dallas Turner Is Partnering With Old Spice Ahead of the NFL Draft

Heavy Sports dropped by the P&G House in Detroit on the eve of the NFL draft. Turner is partnering with Old Spice to make sure he feels good for one of the biggest nights of his life.

“Real excited for the draft and this next step I’m about to take,” Turner explained. “There’s a lot [that’s] about to change for my family and things like that. But you know, Old Spice is with me, P&G and the guys. They got this new total body deodorant. …Whole 24/7 [will] get you right.”

The Atlanta Falcons have eight picks in the 2024 NFL draft, including two in the first 43 picks. As they look to add talent around an already impressive roster that got better after signing Kirk Cousins, PFF proposed a trade that would land the Falcons the No. 54 pick from the Cleveland Browns.

In the deal, the Falcons would send the No. 74 pick and a 2025 third-round pick. PFF has the Falcons drafting Braden Fiske of Florida State at N0. 54.

“Atlanta needs to get to quarterbacks quicker, especially on obvious passing downs, and Fiske should help massively there while offering some depth on early downs,” PFF wrote in their seven-round NFL mock draft released on April 22.

PFF’s scouting report on Fiske highlighted his quick first step and fast hands.

“Fiske played five seasons at Western Michigan, including three as a full-time starter, before transferring to Florida State in 2023. While the Power Five level presented a new challenge, he grew more comfortable over time,” PFF wrote on April 16. “Fiske wins with a quick first step and fast hands, allowing him to be an effective one-gap penetrator and making him tough to reach block. His shorter arms limit the depth of his pass-rush tool bag despite his good understanding of moves. His club-arm over/swim is potent.

“His weight limits his strength in run defense, but he holds up well pound-for-pound and possesses good eyes and anticipation for where the ball is going.”

Falcons’ Key Draft Needs

The Atlanta Falcons didn’t get to the quarterback enough in the 2023-24 season, as evidenced by their 42 sacks. Their 42 sacks ranked in the bottom 12 of the league.

Scott Kennedy of Sports Illustrated viewed a pass rusher as the biggest offseason need for the Falcons.

“That could finally be the case for the Falcons in 2024. Their biggest need now that quarterback has been filled is edge rusher,” Kennedy wrote in his Falcons’ biggest needs in the NFL draft column released on April 18. “That the Falcons doubled their sack total from 21 to 42 in 2023 and still finished 21st in the NFL in total sacks illustrates just how poor Atlanta has been in getting after the quarterback. They were dead last in pass-rush-win rate according to ESPN.”

By making the trade that PFF proposed with the Cleveland Browns, the Falcons would have an opportunity to draft an edge rusher.

Pass Rushing Options for the Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons will have an option to draft an elite edge rusher in the first round. In ESPN’s mock draft by Jordan Reid and Matt Miller released on April 19, the Falcons were mocked to draft Dallas Turner, an edge rusher out of Alabama.

“My top-ranked defensive player in the draft, Turner would give the Falcons a high-end starter off the edge,” Reid wrote. “Atlanta was last in pass rush win rate (30.9%) and tied for 21st in sacks (42) last season, and Turner has immense upside.

“Yeah, the Falcons have to get a pass-rusher in this draft, and considering Turner is my No. 7 overall player, this works out well,” Miller wrote. “He had 10 sacks last season.”

Turner, Jared Verse, Laiatu Latu, and Adisa Isaac are viewed as the top edge options in the draft, according to PFF.

The Atlanta Falcons hold the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, giving them an opportunity to draft a potential impact player. With the Falcons having a lack of cap space after signing Kirk Cousins in March, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report suggested a trade that would send the Dallas Cowboys the No. 8 pick for the No. 24 pick, No. 56 pick and a 2025 first-round pick.

Moving the No. 8 pick in this proposed deal would allow the Falcons to land more talent to pair with Cousins and the rest of the roster.

“The Atlanta Falcons addressed their biggest concern by signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins at the onset of free agency,” Kay wrote in an April 15 column in which he proposed one trade for each team picking in the top 10. “They can now focus on fine-tuning the remainder of the roster.

“Unfortunately, Atlanta doesn’t have much in the way of cap space to work with following the blockbuster Cousins signing. It needs to have a strong draft to field a complete lineup that’s capable of making a Super Bowl run. Trading down from No. 8 overall would give the Falcons more chances at unearthing contributors not only this year, but also in future seasons.”

No. 8 a ‘Valuable’ Draft Spot

The expectation is for Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, and Drake Maye to be selected with the first three picks in the draft.

But in such a scenario, teams will still have a chance to draft wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze, offensive tackle Joe Alt, linebacker Dallas Turner, tight end Brock Bowers, quarterback J.J. McCarthy and many other high-level prospects.

“Atlanta’s pick shouldn’t be too pricy since the top quarterbacks should be long gone, but No. 8 is still a valuable spot for teams in need of offensive tackle help that want to jump ahead of the Chicago Bears and New York Jets,” Kay wrote. “That alone could be worth an additional first-rounder in 2025, plus a first-round pick swap this year.”

Falcons’ Key Draft Needs

As the Falcons approach the draft, they have three needs, according to Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

In his April 19 column exploring the key needs in the draft, Kendall views an edge rusher, cornerback and wide receiver as priorities.

“The Falcons are moving to a 3-4 base, meaning they may not be interested in bringing back last year’s starters, Bud Dupree and Calais Campbell, both of whom remain free agents. Lorenzo Carter, Arnold Ebiketie, Zach Harrison and DeAngelo Malone are the current candidates on the roster, but a starting-caliber player in the draft would help.”

He wrote that despite adding three wide receivers — Darnell Mooney, KhaDeral Hodge and Ray-Ray McCloud — there’s need for more. If Harrison, Nabers or Odunze is available at No. 8, it’ll be “interesting” to see what the Falcons do, he wrote.

“Yes, the Falcons added three wide receivers during March to team up with Drake London, but there’s room for more, and it will be especially interesting if one of this year’s three top prospects — Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze — is available at No. 8.”

The post Former Patriots HC Bill Belichick Believed the Falcons Job Was His: Report appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
When Bill Belichick became available to be the head coach of a new franchise, it seemed certain that he was going to get a job. However, that never ended up happening. In a column released on April 17 by Don Van Natta Jr., Seth Wickersham, and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Belichick believed the Atlanta Falcons job was his.

“On the morning of Jan. 25, a few hours before the Atlanta Falcons named Raheem Morris to be their next head coach, Bill Belichick believed the job was his.”

Belichick believed he had done everything right, putting him in a position to be the next head coach of the Falcons.

“From Belichick’s perspective, according to sources close to him, he had done everything right.”

Raheem Morris getting the job as the head coach came as a surprise to many, including Belichick.

“And then, like many fans, Belichick was blindsided by news that Atlanta had hired Morris, the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator who had worked for six years as an assistant coach and coordinator in Atlanta. Soon, the seven offseason coaching vacancies outside New England were filled — all by coaches with lesser résumés.”

Belichick ‘Wasn’t Seeking’ Total Control

Working with the New England Patriots as the head coach for 24 years, Belichick has arguably the most decorated coaching career in NFL history. With six Super Bowl championships, coaching arguably the greatest quarterback ever in Tom Brady, and all the other stories along the way, Belichick and the Patriots were a dynasty.

During his time with the Patriots, Belichick had full control over coaching and personnel decisions since the day arrived, according to a column by Judy Battista of NFL.com on January 11.

“Belichick had exercised full control over coaching and personnel ever since he first arrived, and for years, he had wielded that power with stunning success.”

While he had the power to do so with the Patriots, ESPN reports that Belichick told Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank “that he wasn’t seeking the total control” similar to how he was in New England.

“He assured Blank that he wasn’t seeking the total control he had for most of his 24 seasons in New England. He pledged to work with the team’s existing group of decision-makers, including general manager Terry Fontenot. Belichick also knew that Blank had checked his references with a group that included Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his son, Jonathan.”

However, the Falcons believed that if they hired Belichick, the whole package would come with him.

“And in the pair of interviews with Blank and Falcons executives, sources said, Belichick pledged his willingness to co-exist with Falcons executives under this new paradigm. In fact, he insisted he just wants to coach. But the Falcons realized that if you hire Bill Belichick, you hire all of him, an entire philosophy and ethos stemming from one man’s ethic and ingenuity, sources said.”

Blank Warned to ‘Not Trust Bill’

Belichick and Blank met on January 15, meeting at the Atlanta Falcons owner’s $180 million superyacht. According to ESPN, a source believed Blank came away thinking Belichick was his guy.

“I think Blank came away from the boat thinking this is my guy,” a source close to Belichick said.

Meeting four days later on January 19, Belichick again believed the meeting went well, but CEO Rich McKay, general manager Terry Fontenot, and team president Greg Beadles attended the meeting. McKay and Fontenot reportedly didn’t want to work with Belichick.

“By the time the meeting was over, Belichick felt confident it had gone well, a source close to him said. But a source familiar with the Falcons’ thinking said neither McKay nor Fontenot wanted to work with Belichick.”

Despite the promising conversation to be the Falcons’ head coach from the legends’ perspective, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft told Blank not to trust Belichick.

“Robert called Arthur to warn him not to trust Bill.”

A spokesman for Kraft denied that this happened, saying he advocated for him to get the Falcons job.

“Robert steadfastly denies saying anything negative to Arthur Blank about Bill Belichick after Robert and Bill mutually agreed to part ways,” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said. “In fact, Robert advocated for Bill to get the job.”

The Atlanta Falcons hosted University of Georgia wide receiver, Ladd McConkey, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. McConkey visited with the Falcons on April 12.

“#Georgia WR Ladd McConkey is visiting with the #Falcons today, after visiting with the #Browns recently, source said. Atlanta is one of 14 teams to do in-person work on the versatile WR. McConkey is an intriguing late 1st, early 2nd option.”

McConkey, who played three seasons at Georgia, averaged 15.9 yards per catch last season. His best season came in 2022, posting 762 yards on 58 receptions for seven touchdowns.

He played in just nine games last season due to a back injury.

In McConkey’s three seasons, he posted 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns on 119 receptions. The Falcons have improved their wide receiver room this offseason, signing Darnell Mooney and others. However, the Falcons are doing their due diligence on him after hosting him for an in-person workout and pre-draft visit.

Falcons Draft Needs

The Atlanta Falcons currently have eight draft packs with two being in the first two rounds. The Falcons hold the No. 8 pick in the first round and the No. 43 pick in the second round.

After signing Kirk Cousins, Terrin Waack, the Falcons digital team reporter, writes that he deserves more targets if he wants to succeed with the Falcons.

“For the most part, the Atlanta Falcons have restocked their wide receiver room through free agency, bringing in three new faces. That’s a step in the right direction. And yet, there are still more steps the Falcons can – and should – take before the new season begins.”

“Drake London was the only Falcons wide receiver retained from last season. Four is a fair number but still not enough. Kirk Cousins deserves more targets if he wants to thrive in Atlanta as the new quarterback.”

Waack then went on to list potential draft options, listing McConkey as one of six “Day 1 options.”

How McConkey Would Help the Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons offense struggled in 2023, scoring the seventh fewest points per game at 18.9. Their offense struggled in large part due to their lack of a passing game, averaging just 207.3 passing yards per game, which ranked in the bottom half of the NFL.

While the addition of Cousins, who has thrown for over 4,220 yards in each of the last three full seasons he’s played, should help the Falcons passing game, adding McConkey could also give them another look.

Scott Carasik of Blogging Dirty viewed McConkey as someone who could help take the Falcons’ offense “to the next level.” Carasik lists McConkey’s strengths as separation, speed, and being a reliable target.

“Ladd McConkey is more than just a slot receiver as a prospect. He’s someone that could help the Atlanta Falcons offense take it to the next level.

“McConkey lines up all over the formation and would provide speed, separation and most importantly, a reliable target to add to the Falcons arsenal. The arsenal that already includes Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts can use more long-term talent on it. If the Falcons kept McConkey in Georgia, they wouldn’t regret it.”

The post Falcons Sign Former Packers 2nd-Round Cornerback: Report appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
The Atlanta Falcons have signed Kevin King, a former Green Bay Packers second-round pick, according to Terrin Waack, the Falcons’ digital team reporter.

“The Atlanta Falcons signed cornerback Kevin King, the team announced Monday. This transaction marks King’s return to the NFL after two consecutive years away.

“King comes to Atlanta with five active seasons on his professional resume from 2017-21. The Green Bay Packers originally drafted King out of Washington with a second-round pick. After four years on a rookie contract, King and the Packers agreed to terms on a one-year deal in 2021.”

Why Kevin King Hasn’t Played in 2 Seasons

King missed the 2022 season for personal reasons and 2023 due to a torn Achilles tendon he suffered during an offseason workout.

In a video released on his YouTube channel, King spoke about sitting out the 2022 and 2023 seasons, giving fans the exact reason why he wasn’t able to be on the field.

“After my fifth year with the Packers I was actually pretty healthy. It was a time when I felt pretty good for the first time in a while. My first four years I had surgery after every year so I didn’t have much of a chance to have an offseason,” King said. “They don’t really talk about the wear and tear on you mentally that it does, dealing with injuries.”

In the same video, King announced his injury, saying “I knew it” when referring to tearing his Achilles.

Cornerback Was an Area of Need for the Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons signing King allows them to take a chance on a cornerback who could end up being a valuable player for them. King has shown promise in his play, especially his 2019 season, when he started 14 of 15 games and had five interceptions.

The 2021 season, the last time King was on the field, was the worst of his career, He had just one interception and allowed a 71.4% completion percentage on 28 targets. In his five seasons, King made 197 tackles, five tackles for loss, and intercepted seven passes.

King will be reunited with familiar faces with the Falcons. Falcons defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake was King’s secondary coach at Washington. Falcons secondary coach Justin Hood was the Green Bay Packers defensive quality coach during King’s final season.

Waack, in an article released on March 5, viewed the cornerback position as an area the Falcons needed to improve, writing that they needed to find A.J. Terrell a consistent partner.

“The Falcons need to find A.J. Terrell a consistent dance partner at this spot in the secondary. Terrell was the only player to start every game here in 2023. Otherwise, his counterpart began as Jeff Okudah but finished as Clark Phillips III.

“Terrell is a lock in 2024, still under contract. Phillips will also return, but his status as a starter remains in question. Okudah will become a free agent now that his rookie contract is up, with the possibility of re-signing in Atlanta.”

The Falcons haven’t signed any other cornerbacks in free agency, so the need wasn’t addressed until this signing.

The Atlanta Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract at the beginning of free agency, putting to rest any quarterback conversations that were bound to happen during the offseason. While they landed Cousins, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who was on the trade market, had an interest in playing for the Falcons, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.

“Chicago, intending to move the three-year starter as it prepared to select a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, was willing to give Fields some say in his next destination. The Steelers were one of four teams on Fields’ radar prior to the start of free agency, along with the Vikings, Raiders and Falcons, a source familiar with Fields’ thinking said.”

Fields, born in Kennesaw Georgia, ended up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s not surprising to hear that the former Bears quarterback wanted to come home and play for the Falcons.

Falcons Signing Cousins Was the Smart Move

Cousins is coming off an Achilles injury, but is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to go this season. Signing him was the smart thing to do for the Atlanta Falcons, adding a legitimate option at the quarterback position to give Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts all they need to succeed.

Fields could’ve given them decent production, as seen from his time with the Chicago Bears, but Cousins, statistically, has been much better.

Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot knew they needed to upgrade the position, according to Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

“We knew going into this offseason we needed to upgrade that position. It was critical.

“(Cousins) is a known commodity. We know he’s going to be a multiplier for us. We have a lot of good young talent on offense. We have a really good offensive line that’s chomping at the bit. There is excitement right now.”

Fontenot wasn’t the only one who believed in Cousins, as owner Arthur Blank also wanted him.

“We think very highly of Kirk, which I think is evidenced by the contract,” Blank said.

“We needed significantly better play at that position, and I think Kirk will give us that opportunity. He’s had a lot of great years in the NFL and is playing really well of late, so we’re excited to have him.”

How Cousins Will Help the Falcons

Statistically, the Atlanta Falcons just added a quarterback who has thrown for over 4,000 yards in most seasons of his career. Cousins had three straight seasons with over 4,200 yards prior to his Achilles injury this season, including three years with at least 29 touchdown passes.

If he can come in and give the Falcons 4,221 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in a season, the Falcons’ offense will be greatly improved.

All-time great Troy Aikman has loved what he’s seen out of Cousins in his career, praising his ability to read a defense.

“I like him a lot as a thrower of the football and (for) his ability to read a defense and get the ball out,” Troy Aikman said.

“I want to see a quarterback drop back, put his foot in the ground and get the ball out. I want to see him reading the defense and knowing where to throw the football. Occasionally, you have to go off schedule and run around, but I don’t want to see that as part of over half the pass plays. I really enjoy watching him play.”

With Cousins in town, Aikman describes perfectly what he can bring to a Falcons team that needs better play at the quarterback position. Fields could’ve been an intriguing option, but the Falcons went the other direction and landed Cousins.

Former Atlanta Falcons fan favorite Cordarrelle Patterson has reached an agreement with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

“#Falcons All-Pro and Pro Bowl returner Cordarrelle Patterson, one of the biggest-name free agents still available, is expected to sign with the #Steelers, sources say. He gets a 2-year, $6M deal. As the NFL has altered its kickoff rules, Patterson lands in PIT.”

Patterson reunites with former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith and will play for a Steelers team that has found success throughout much of the past two decades.

The 33-year-old brings value as a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. He’s a four-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time All-Pro in large part due to his kick-returning ability, something that should help the Steelers.

What Patterson Will Bring the Steelers

With the new kickoff rule, Patterson brings all of his value back that was lost when he was on the Atlanta Falcons.

The new kickoff rule should lead to more excitement, especially from players like Patterson. While he would’ve found a team in free agency, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that he got a deal done with the Pittsburgh Steelers the same day this rule was passed.

Patterson had 1,017 kick return yards in the 2020 season and has multiple years with over 500-plus yards. That was drastically down during his time with the Falcons, failing to post more than 450 yards in any of his three seasons with the team.

Factor in his ability to make plays as a receiver and running back and landing him was a smart idea from the Steelers, especially for the price. Patterson’s 2021 season with the Falcons was the best of his career, finishing with 618 rushing yards and 548 receiving yards.

Should the Falcons Have Kept Patterson?

With Kirk Cousins and a new playcaller, the Atlanta Falcons should’ve thought about keeping Patterson. Factor in the cheap deal and keeping him around makes even more sense.

However, he wasn’t used correctly during his final year with the Falcons, receiving just 12 targets and 50 rushing attempts.

Scott Bair of the Falcons was asked why they don’t use all their talent, specifically Patterson.

“Cordarrelle Patterson has just 45 offensive touches this year. That comes after he had 165 in 2022 and 205 in 2021. Patterson has been hurt this season, but his usage is definitely lower as the ball has spread around to more skill players. There’s no doubt that he’s a tough runner and someone who can create big plays in space. He also has breakneck speed but hasn’t been as involved in years past. That’s certainly due to Bijan Robinson’s presence and his ability to do some similar things with the ball in his hands.

“We’ve had lots of usage discussions this year, typically referring to Drake London, Kyle Pitts or Robinson himself. Patterson’s workload has been brought up as well, though it’s hard to imagine him getting a massive uptick down the stretch. It will be interesting to see what happens with him in the future, considering this is a contract year for the 11th-year veteran.”

With him heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers with Smith, it’d make sense if they use him more than they did with the Falcons.

It’s a no-brainer for the price and something the Falcons should’ve been interested in if Patterson wanted to return.

Atlanta Falcons free agent Cordarrelle Patterson can bring a different dynamic to teams looking for offensive help this offseason. Patterson gives a unique threat as a running back and wide receiver, something that should have a wide range of teams interested. While his time appears to be done with the Falcons, Lorenzo Reyna of Pro Football Network views the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, and Chicago Bears as potential landing spots.

For the Chiefs and 49ers, the want is obvious for Patterson. Landing another offensive weapon that can make plays on a likely cheap contract for a Super Bowl contending team always makes sense and that’d be the case in this scenario.

Reyna viewed the Chiefs as a destination due to Clyde Edwards-Helaire being on the free-agent market.

“The reason? Clyde Edwards-Helaire is on the free agent market. While Patterson isn’t as youthful as Edwards-Helaire, he’s the perfect veteran compliment to Isiah Pacheco who can give the Chiefs a needed size advantage in the backfield — especially when Andy Reid calls for a pass. Plus, this place gives Patterson one of his best chances at finally winning a Super Bowl ring.”

While the Falcons will be improved next season, the Chiefs have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl. That could and should intrigue Patterson, who’s 33 years old.

Super Bowl Contenders Could Use Patterson

Patterson spent three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, posting two seasons with at least 600 rushing yards. He also had a 548-yard receiving season in 2021.

Similar to how Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson haven’t played how many were hoping for, Patterson also might’ve struggled due to the quarterback situation. Much of his value was as a kick returner, even in his first year with the Falcons.

He’d be an intriguing option for Super Bowl contending teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, who also have quarterbacks who can get him the ball.

Reyna viewed the 49ers as a destination for him to chase a title, too.

“I wouldn’t rule out the 49ers either as a destination for Patterson to chase a title, but there should be plenty of intrigue on both Patterson’s and the 49ers’ end to become a pairing.

“For one, Patterson can play in Kyle Shanahan’s zone attack — which has showcased Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel as a dynamic running/receiving threat. Secondly, Patterson can help rest the duo and serve as the third option as an RB/WR.”

Why Patterson Makes Sense for the Bears

Patterson, a four-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time All-Pro spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears before joining the Atlanta Falcons. He had fewer than 250 rushing yards and 135 receiving yards in both seasons with the Bears.

However, he had 1,017 yards as a kick returner in 2020 and 825 in 2019 for the Bears. Patterson only returned seven kicks in 2023 and nine in 2022, so those days could be behind him.

While the production could be similar to what it was with the Falcons and his stint with the Bears, he’d give their expected rookie quarterback another weapon. Patterson could also be interested in playing with the Bears given they should be a better team and he’s been with the organization before.

Patterson playing for the Bears would be similar to him playing with the Falcons. They likely don’t have a chance to win a Super Bowl but he can be a trusted veteran and someone who improves the offense if used correctly.

Proposed Falcons Trade Sends No. 8 to Vikings for Massive Draft Haul https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/atlanta-falcons/vikings-trade-no-eight-pick/?adt_ei=[email] https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/atlanta-falcons/vikings-trade-no-eight-pick/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 22:05:45 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4915010 A proposed trade would send the Minnesota Vikings the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Atlanta Falcons for two first-round picks.

The post Proposed Falcons Trade Sends No. 8 to Vikings for Massive Draft Haul appeared first on Heavy Sports.

]]>
After landing Kirk Cousins in free agency, the Atlanta Falcons have multiple decisions they can make in the NFL Draft. What was once a pick that could draft their future quarterback could now be moved for future compensation. Teams could be interested in moving up and if the Falcons believe it’ll help their team in the future, that might be the best decision. Matt Urben of The Falcons Wire released a mock draft where the Falcons traded the No. 8 pick to the Minnesota Vikings for two first-round picks, a move that could interest the front office.

Urben doesn’t expect the Falcons to draft a quarterback, making it possible they’ll move the pick.

“In the NFL, the new league year represents the official start of free agency, but it also serves as the unofficial start of the draft. For example, the Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Kirk Cousins on the opening day of free agency, making it unlikely that they select a QB with the No. 8 overall pick.”

With the No. 8 pick, he had the Vikings drafting J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan. The trade would land the Falcons the No. 23 pick and a future first-round pick, a huge price to pay to select McCarthy.

“After losing Cousins to Atlanta, the Vikings give up a future first-rounder to Atlanta along with pick No. 23 to move up for McCarthy. The Michigan QB is a good fit for Minnesota’s scheme and has an elite upside if he gets time to develop.”

Vikings Looking to Trade Up

The Minnesota Vikings made a trade on March 15 to acquire another first-round pick from the Houston Texans. Minnesota landed the No. 23 pick in the 2024 draft for a 2024 second-round pick, a 2024 sixth-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick.

With the No. 11 pick, this makes them the perfect trade-up candidate.

ESPN’s Matt Miller reports that the Minnesota Vikings are looking to trade up in the draft.

“With Cousins in Atlanta and Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh, the Vikings (No. 11) and Broncos (No. 12) are trade-up candidates. There is considerable buzz about Minnesota trying to move into the top five to secure a quarterback such as McCarthy or potentially Maye/Daniels if either falls past New England.

“Friday saw the Vikings make a move to add an additional first-round selection (No. 23) from the Texans — in exchange for 2024 second- and sixth-round picks, plus a 2025 second-rounder. With two first-round picks, the Vikings now own the draft capital to fly up the board for a quarterback.”

Why The Falcons Should Move The No. 8 Pick

If the Atlanta Falcons were to get No. 11 or No. 23 with a future first in 2025, it’s something they should think about doing. While the No. 8 pick could get them a promising player, getting a first in this draft allows them to still draft a useful player.

Factor in the other first-round pick they’d get in the deal from the Minnesota Vikings and it’s the perfect deal. With a rookie quarterback, the Vikings could have a rough season in 2024. Similar to the Carolina Panthers, their future first could even be the No. 1 pick.

It’s a gamble, but it could benefit the Falcons in the long run.

]]>
With the Dallas Cowboys‘ decision to release wide receiver Michael Gallup, a return home could make sense for the 28-year-old receiver. Gallup, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, would add another weapon to an already impressive Atlanta Falcons offense.

The Falcons offense has a chance to be special with Kirk Cousins, Kyle Pitts, Bijan Robinson, and Drake London. However, Pitts, Robinson, and London are all in the early stages of their careers. Gallup has been in the league since 2018 and would add a different presence to the wide receiver room both on and off the field. Lorenzo Reyna of Pro Football Network believes the Falcons are an ideal landing spot for him, hinting at Atlanta running a pass-friendly offense.

“The 28-year-old receiver is a native of Atlanta. It just so happens the Falcons could still use veterans for their air attack. Yes, Drake London and Kyle Pitts are expected to be fed the ball with Kirk Cousins on board. However, the Falcons are anticipated to run multiple three-wideout looks with new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson calling the shots.

“That means Atlanta is running a more WR-friendly attack — perfect for Gallup to walk into. Here’s another reason why Robinson’s presence on the first Raheem Morris Falcons staff can entice WRs like Gallup: Robinson is bringing in the same offense that turned Cooper Kupp into the league’s top wideout of 2021 and got Puka Nacua to emerge as a 100-catch wideout. This is a hard offense for a receiver to say no to. Perhaps Gallup could be convinced to head home.”

What Would Gallup Add to the Falcons Offense?

The Atlanta Falcons scored 18.9 points per game last season, good for the seventh worst in the NFL. While plenty of those struggles can be put on Desmond Ridder, this offense wasn’t exactly anything special.

Adding Cousins to the mix helps, and even makes the Falcons one of the top teams in the division, if not the favorite. However, it’s important to recognize that London, Pitts, and Robinson haven’t necessarily put together an impressive NFL offense. That can change, and is expected to, but why not add another guy who the Falcons can trust in Gallup?

In the worst scenario, Gallup would give them a No. 3 receiver. If he plays how he has for parts of his career, he could even be the No. 2.

Gallup has struggled at times since the Dallas Cowboys gave him a five-year deal, but an ACL tear in the 2021-22 season didn’t help that.

Now, expecting to be healthy, Gallup can give this team a different look and another option for Cousins to throw the ball to.

Falcons Draft Predictions

The Atlanta Falcons hold the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, giving them the possibility to draft one of the top wide receivers in the draft.

Atlanta will likely have an opportunity to draft one of Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze, but draft predictions don’t expect that.

According to Kyle Dvorchak of NBC Sports, he predicts the Falcons will draft Dallas Turner, an edge from the University of Alabama.

“Coming off a 10-sack season in his third year at Bama, Turner is the current favorite to be the first defender off the board. The Falcons are relatively set on offense but ranked below league-average in pressure and sack rate in 2023. They’ve been stuck below that bar in most pass-rushing stats for years. Turner gives their defense a chance to get over the hump.”

If they draft a defensive player, adding another receiver similar to Gallup should be in the works.

The list of Atlanta Falcons wide receivers is growing as the franchise continues to add playmakers for Kirk Cousins. Atlanta acquired electric receiver Rondale Moore in a deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

The trade officially ends the Desmond Ridder era in Atlanta as the Falcons-Cardinals agreed to a rare NFL player-for-player swap. Ridder heads to the Cardinals where he is expected to serve as the backup quarterback to Kyler Murray.

Moore was once a college football darling during a standout career at Purdue. The wideout was utilized all over the field as a receiver, running back and on special teams as a shifty returner. Moore’s NFL career has not had the same kind of pop that the wideout had while turning heads with highlight-reel plays in the Big Ten.

The trade comes one day after the Falcons agreed to terms with former Chicago Bears receiver Darnell Mooney. Atlanta also signed another speedster in Ray-Ray McCloud after acquiring Moore.

Not only do the Falcons have a new QB1, but Cousins will be throwing to a revamped receiver group. These veterans join key Falcons playmakers like Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson who are already on the roster.

Falcons News: Receiver Rondale Moore Had an All-American Season With 114 Catches for 1,258 Yards and 12 TDs in 2018

By far, Moore’s best season came during his freshman year at Purdue. Moore posted 114 receptions for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns in 13 appearances during the 2018 season.

The wideout also added 21 carries for 213 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. Moore’s breakout performance earned the receiver All-American honors in 2018.

The veteran’s NFL production has been much more modest as his combined three seasons do not match his 2018 receiving performance at Purdue. Moore posted 40 receptions for 352 yards and a touchdown in 17 appearances last season with the Cardinals. The playmaker was utilized more in the running attack adding career-highs with 28 carries for 178 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Falcons Playmaker Rondale Moore Drew Comparisons to Seahawks Star Tyler Lockett Heading Into the 2021 NFL Draft

Moore is going into a prove-it season and may have the best opportunity of his NFL career to produce in Atlanta. The receiver will be in the final season of a four-year, $6.9 million rookie deal. Moore is slated to have a $1.6 million salary and cap hit in 2024.

Arizona selected Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft with the No. 49 overall pick. Heading into the draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Moore to standout Seattle Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett.

“Slightly undersized slot receiver who makes up for it with above-average strength and competitive fire that shows up throughout the tape,” Zierlein wrote of Moore in his pre-draft profile. “He can beat one-on-one coverage with speed but lacks the size and length to legitimately challenge NFL cornerbacks outside.

“He’s difficult to press, elusive out of route breaks underneath and his ability after the catch could make him a priority target when it’s time to move the sticks on third down. He lacks desired game experience on paper, but he’s the same player week in and week out and teams know exactly what they will get with him,” Zierlein continued.

“His football character and acumen are big pluses to go with his talent. Moore should become a good starting slot target with punt return potential.”

The Atlanta Falcons are signing former Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney to a three-year, $39 million deal with $26 million fully guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on March 12. Mooney, 26 years old, gets a new start in an offense that needed another threat.

After signing Kirk Cousins on March 11, the Falcons were in the mix for receivers, looking to add weapons around an already talented group. Mooney now joins a room full of young stars, including Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts.

He’s struggled throughout the past two seasons, posting less than 500 yards in both seasons. However, his 2021 season was impressive, putting up 1,055 yards on 81 receptions.

With Cousins throwing him the football, Mooney has a chance to prove he’s still a high-end wide receiver in the NFL.

Falcons Have Made Impressive Moves Early

The Atlanta Falcons have made multiple moves that align with their future. All of the moves have been to help the offensive side of the football, something they needed to do after scoring 18.9 points few games, ranking 26th in football.

With the decision to sign Cousins, the Falcons offense instantly improved. If he can come back and do what he did prior to his injury, giving the Falcons a quarterback who can throw for 4,000-plus yards every season, the offense has a chance to be one of the top in the NFC.

Dave Choate of The Falcoholic viewed wide receiver as a position of need this offseason, specifically in the draft.

“The Falcons will use Bijan Robinson as a slot receiver and kick Cordarrelle Patterson out wide at times, and Kyle Pitts will line up all over to create mismatches. Given that, the need at receiver isn’t quite as dire as it would seem, but it’s still a significant need. Mack Hollins is currently the de facto No. 2 receiver and is capable enough—especially as a blocker—but beyond Drake London there just isn’t any proven, high-end talent.

“Snagging a player the Falcons believe can be a factor opposite London over the long haul, even if they take some time to get up to speed, still feels like a good use of draft capital. There are quite a few set to be available in Round 3, if all goes well.”

While drafting a receiver wasn’t a bad option, the Falcons went the safer route and landed one of the best on the market.

They also have picks to use in the draft on defensive players and other needs.

What Darnell Mooney Brings to the Falcons

Mooney gives the Atlanta Falcons a true No. 2 receiver to pair with London. He may end up as the No. 1 receiver depending on how the season goes.

They weren’t lacking weapons with Robinson, Pitts, and London, but Mooney brings them a player who can help the others. Taking away pressure from Robinson, Pitts, and London will be a huge help for them.

The former Chicago Bears receiver has great speed, adding even more athleticism and speed to an already athletic offense.

At worst, this move helps Robinson, Pitts, and London all become the players they’ve shown to be at the top of their games.

The post Falcons in Agreement With San Francisco 49ers TE, George Kittle’s Backup appeared first on Heavy Sports.

The Atlanta Falcons entered the offseason with a need to land a backup tight end. On the first day of free agency, the Falcons did just that as they landed former San Francisco 49ers tight end Charlie Woerner on a three-year, $12 million deal, according to Michael Rothstein of ESPN.

Woerner has spent his entire career with the 49ers after being drafted by the team in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Woerner has just 11 receptions for 120 yards in his career.

Woerner should have more of an opportunity to play with the Falcons after backing up George Kittle for his entire career. He appeared in all 17 games last season due to his blocking ability, a key contribution to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.

At $4 million per year, the Falcons must see something in him that can help the team.

What Will Woerner Bring to the Falcons?

The Atlanta Falcons have a potential star tight end in Kyle Pitts. While Pitts hasn’t lived up to the expectations after being drafted in the first round, posting just 2,049 yards in three seasons with 6 touchdowns, Kirk Cousins could change that.

With a legitimate quarterback for the first time in his young career, Pitts can burst onto the scene and be the star the Falcons offense needs.

However, Woerner will still be needed after the team decided to let Jonnu Smith walk. The 26-year-old Georgia Bulldog product will get his chances to make plays but is expected to serve as a run blocker for Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier.

With the addition of Cousins, adding a tight end who can block was essential. Cousins, 35 years old and coming off an Achilles tear, isn’t the most athletic quarterback in the world. He’ll need to be protected and Woerner gives them that.

Dave Choate of The Falcoholic views this move as an upgrade in the blocking department, something the team needs.

“Woerner is here to block, bluntly. The Falcons may see some untapped pass catching upside in the Georgia product, but he has 11 receptions in four NFL seasons and isn’t going to be more than the seventh or eighth option in this passing attack.

“What Woerner does do well is pave the way for running backs and hold his own in pass protection, two roles the Falcons will prize because they have dynamic young running back talents in Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier and an aging, not super mobile quarterback in Kirk Cousins who needs time in the pocket to thrive.”

Falcons Were Active on First Day of Offseason

With cap space, a young team with talent, and a new head coach, the Atlanta Falcons made the most of the first day of the offseason.

They made the biggest splash with the addition of Cousins and landed a serviceable backup in Woerner.

After making their initial move with Cousins, the Falcons can now search for other talent on the market with confidence. They found their quarterback, which was the most important need heading into the offseason.

After months of speculation on what the Atlanta Falcons would decide to do this offseason for a quarterback, that decision quickly ended at the start of free agency. Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has agreed to a four-year, $180 million contract, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Cousins wears No. 8, the same number that Kyle Pitts wears. Moments after the deal was announced, Pitts took to X and hinted at a potential number change.

Could he be going back to No. 84? That’s what number the highly touted tight end wore when he was at the University of Florida.

Oftentimes, veteran players pay for their jersey number, so it’ll be interesting to see if Cousins does that with Pitts.

Encouraging Day for the Falcons

After a few seasons of falling short of expectations, the Atlanta Falcons look to get back to the top. This once proud franchise has an opportunity to be one of the better teams in football next season after signing a quarterback who can help their young talent succeed.

It’s easy to look ahead, but the Falcons have a legitimate chance to win the NFC South. In fact, they might even have an argument to be the clear favorite heading into the season.

Adding a quarterback was a necessity and not only did they do that, they did it with the best available quarterback on the market.

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had the following to say about losing his franchise quarterback, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

“After significant and positive dialogue with Kirk and his representatives, we were unable to reach agreement on a contract that fits the short and long-term visions for both Kirk and the Minnesota Vikings.

“Kirk holds a special place in Vikings history, and we appreciate his leadership and contributions to the team and the Minneapolis-St. Paul community over the past six seasons. We wish him, his wife, Julie, and their children all the best.”

Cousins spent six seasons as the Vikings starter, throwing for over 4,000 yards in every season that he was healthy besides 2019.

This Could Be the Season Kyle Pitts Breaks Out

The decision to sign Cousins benefits the entire roster, but Pitts finally has a chance to get targets from a legitimate quarterback.

Pitts hasn’t played with a quarterback of his caliber during his three-year career. While the former No. 4 pick hasn’t played his best football, posting a 356-yard season in 2022 and a 667-yard with 3-touchdown season in 2023, he has an opportunity to show the league he’s as good as he was expected to be.

Doing so will make the Atlanta Falcons an even better team.

Jason Katz of Pro Football Network wrote about the potential between the two.

“Pitts was once considered the greatest tight-end prospect of all time. He had over 1,000 receiving yards as a rookie. With Cousins, Pitts has a legitimate shot to finish as the overall TE1. I know that may sound like hyperbole, but if the talent is there, Cousins is the key to unlocking it.”
